War in Iran could disrupt Easter rugby festivals

The ongoing conflict in and around Iran is set to have a significant ripple effect on the global economy in the months – and possibly years – ahead.

Among those already feeling the impact are travel routes through Dubai, a major international hub for flights to and from South Africa. Any disruption or increased risk in the region could further complicate logistics for teams travelling to the country for the Easter rugby festivals.

As uncertainty grows, there is a real possibility that overseas schools and institutes planning to participate in the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, St John’s Easter Rugby Festival, and St Stithians Easter Rugby Festival may be forced to reconsider their involvement in the coming days.

Rerouting flights is an option, but it comes at a considerable cost – one that is only expected to rise as the conflict places upward pressure on global oil prices and, in turn, travel expenses.

The touring teams potentially affected include:

Catholic University School (CUS) (Ireland) – Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival

Hartpury  (England) – St Stithians Easter Rugby Festival

St Joseph’s College Nudgee (Australia) – St John’s Easter Rugby Festival

Westlake Boys High School (New Zealand) – St John’s Easter Rugby Festival

With timelines tightening and costs escalating, the next few days could prove decisive for international participation in what are traditionally showpiece events on the South African school rugby calendar.
