Schoolboy rugby is big and it costs a lot of money these days to run a decent rugby programme. The big-name rugby schools’ programmes are run at a very high, elite level. Their budgets run into the hundreds of thousands of rands, some a lot more.

SBR regular, Kaya 85 is involved with a new Non-Profit called Rugby Boosters FC. This is a networking group of rugby supporters – particularly schools rugby fans – who want to boost rugby programmes of struggling schools and teams by proving kit and equipment along with whatever other support is needed.

Last year, one of the schools teams at the lower rungs of the NoordVaal Cup ecosystem caught Kaya’s attention with their committed and attractive brand of rugby. In 2024 the school ran two teams. In 2025 they added another team, all three of which won their age group leagues in the Golden Lions Rugby structure. The first team won their NoordVaal final too. The name of the school will be kept discreet to protect the dignity of the players and community.

This year we are boosting the team by assisting them by providing necessities based on whatever sponsorships, fundraisers and/or donations we can obtain. The current status of this Rugby Boosters project can be seen below.

Readers and regulars might have contacts, or equipment, or something to contribute. This can be done by contacting Kaya through Beet. Rugby Boosters FC is a Non-Profit Voluntary Association raising funds, donations and/or sponsors for new jerseys, match shorts, gum guards together with balls and other equipment as our contributions allow. Our intention is to support and ‘boost’ school rugby in this and any other feasible way to grow new generations of young players imbued with the values and ethos of the game.

I would think that a major union like the lions would gladly donate their old practice balls and old match day balls to a school that can definitely use it or would they?????
