Amazing how fortunes can change though. Marais Viljoen won the Beeld Trofee not that long ago, now they being relegated again. They could be playing their neighbours Dinamika.

Yes, I saw that. I wonder where the various Jhb Saint schools would compete? I suspect that the better ones would slot in to the Shield and Bowl comps and the weaker ones in Group 2 and 3.

Selfs spelers soos Pieter Stef (Hoërskool Swartland), Marco van Staden (Hoërskool Bekker), Franco Mostert (Hoërskool Brits), Ruan Nortje (Hoërskool Wonderboom)…ook nou nie juis skole wat rugby ligte uitskiet nie.

I, mean, Mapimpi came from Jim Mvabasa SS and Lukhanyo Am from De Vos Malan – very few people outside of the EC have ever heard of these schools.

I felt for Morgenzon Landbou, small school, they had a few large forwards but you could see some of the lads in the team were very young…I’m estimating grade nine? Still, they gave darn good account of themselves.

Looking through the teams who’ve made semi’s throughout the Divisions you see that rugby is alive in many places including Voortrekker Boksburg, President HS, AH Germiston, HS Roodepoort, Jan Viljoen etc etc. as well at a number of Curro and Maragon type privates.

Ah…a lot riding on that U14 game.
What I noticed last week when I watched the Group 5A semi-finals is the absolute emotional commitment of all the teams. I have never seen such utter heartbreak and emotional dejection in the losing teams whose worlds seemed to have collapsed, so distraught they were at being knocked out. If you want to know if school rugby is alive, come to one of these games. The school didn’t have electricity for 6 months last year, community battling economically, everything seems so difficult…and then there’s the rugby programme…enthusiastically supported.

I think last year the team promoted from Group 5B to 5A was Vryburger. In 5B you need two teams: 1st and U15. In 5A, they now field three teams: 1st, U17 and U15, and I’m happy to report that Vryburger reached Noordvaal Finals in all three teams.

Jy is reg dit was in 77. Met n baie jong span, mnr Wollie was die coach.
In 78 het hy n beter span gehad, maar in die halffinaal verloor teen Tom Naude. Ek het hom gevra oor dit, hy se hy het n beter span gehad maar hy kon hulle net nie 2 jaar in n ry motiveer nie.

Ja, dit kon ’77 gewees het. Hulle voormalige hoofseun en onderhoofseun (1975), Lourens Erasmus en Hennie Volschenk, was saam met my in Olienhout – hulle was effens bly, om dit lig te stel.
Volschenk was een van die beste rugbyspelers saam met wie ek ooit gespeel het – vir Naas vervang in NTvl o/20 toe Buurman v Zyl hom opgetrek het snr span toe toe hy 19 was.

Ek verstaan maar alte goed dok, Brakpan….Barrydale….potatoe..potato…en koshuis rugby is seker die hardste/ongenaakbaarste vorm van rugby wat daar was. As jy nie in Maroela of Mopanie koshuis (by Tuks) was nie en jy speel teen een van daai koshuise, moes jy maar geweet het jy gaan iewers tydens ‘n wedstryd tussen ‘n klomp kamp stoele en cooler bokse langs die veld opeindig nadat jy 2 weke laat geduik was en is jy ook nie ‘n bier aangebied daar tussen die cooler bokse nie! en 9 uit 10 keer was die skeidsregter se gidshond ook blind.

Wat ek eintlik vir jou sê: as jy in ‘n klein skooltjie/dorp was, verstaan jy alles van verloor. Koshuis rugby op varsity was ‘n major opgradering as jy ‘n bietjie kon speel!

Apart from the above logs being incorrect/incomplete, Jeugland is not relegated yet. They actually have 148.5 points – only 3 points behind Randburg. With their u/14A team, whose unbeaten in the league, playing in the one 14A semi-final. If they win that semi-final Randburg will be relegated.

That list will be very long, as there are many really small schools in the regions that compete down to Group 5B. Look in the Noordvaal Cup Semifinals thread where I gave the link of the SSSchoolsports site for Kaya.
Some of those small schools typically only have an U15 and 1st team, maybe a 2nd team as well.
Note: I grew up in Barrydale where the High School only had one team. I think I hold some sort of record – I played flyhalf for my schools’ 1st team from St6 to matric (I also played for the town’s only senior team from St8 to matric, in conflict with the school rules – often playing two matches in different towns on a Saturday!)

Thanks for the info. It’d be nice to see an article that covers the entire Noordvaal league system, including displaying all the schools that are in the various leagues, etc.

They move down to Group2, where they play the other lower teams in the Valke region. The winners and runners up in each region have play offs against those of the other regions, with the over all winner being promoted to the Bowl section of Group1.
The groups go down to Group5B, where really small schools like Sannieshof, Pretoria Tech, etc compete.

I’m sad to see Marais Viljoen relegated twice in 2 years…(or 3?)…Hope they can do well in Shield division
