Teams Respond to Personal Tragedies

France U18 to Return Home
On Wednesday, 7 August 2024, Medhi Narjissi, the 17-year-old Toulouse fly-half and son of former Agen hooker, disappeared after taking part in a France U18 team water recovery session at Dias Beach on the Cape of Good Hope. It is believed that he was swept out to sea. The search and rescue operation for him is still underway. The FFR has opened an internal investigation. The France U18 team will skip their planned matches against the hosts, South Africa, as well as England and Georgia, in the six-team festival starting next Monday and will instead fly home.

“Due to the very sad and untimely passing of Hoërskool Jeugland student Emmanuel Makwiting, the match day between Hoërskool Jeugland and Hoërskool Wesvalia was called off.
The decision by Hoërskool Jeugland not to play is respected in light of the impact Emmanuel’s passing has had on the wider community, and more specifically, on the players and coaches.”

    Sorry to hear this.
Oh what sad news…thinking of you, our French rugby friends.
Will we be ready when tragedy strikes?
We send all our love and best wishes to the French…and to Jeugland…to Emmanuel’s family, friends and the community.

    RIP Emmanuel & Medhi. Condolences.

Insanity to take people to swim at Dias beach. Most definitely not a beach for swimming, facing the open ocean and a Northwestern howling from Table Bay. Plenty of perfectly safe swimming beaches on the False Bay side for this weather. Not a current or wave at Boulders etc.
