I agree – PBHS have been huge under achievers over the last few years. A more efficient approach would see rugby results improve significantly.

Yes…even this year they have some big impressive players…they’re just off the pace by a second or so, and not extremely cohesive, almost like amateurs (in the best sense) playing for love…they don’t have to necessarily recruit like crazy, but they could take their rugby to another level. I’ve had personal connection to the school, so I think it’s still a fantastic institution of learning.

IS IT STIFF UPPER LIP OR FEAR OF CHANGE?

    @Kaya 85 (Comment #189)
Do you think it’s a case of keep the stiff upper lip? I think it’s a fear of breaking or altering what PBHS stands for. PBHS have been incredibly slow to react to the changing nature of school boy rugby.

If you look at PBHS rugby since 1920, the average win rate per season is between 55% and 60% (the traditional annual rivals and cup fixtures have changed significantly per decade). Since 2014, PBHS have had one first team who have been within the historical average – 2023 (56% win rate). BTW – PBHS have a shocking historical record against Hilton. They have three wins out of 11 games. The last win coming in 1999. The first fixture against Hilton was in 1923 (a decade before playing KES, Jeppe, etc).

I do find it amusing that Hilton avoided Boys High in their dark rugby days but since the new rugby era has dawned, they have seemingly found a new vigour to play Boys High annually.

Yep, a tight win for St Alban’s at Northcliff. That said, I won’t be surprised when the Northcliff 1st XV win does eventually happen for two reasons:
    .
    1. All the “Saints” schools have declined a little in the past five years, partly as the strength of their opposition (other than St John’s) has declined – e.g. they no longer play PBHS, KES and Jeppe (mostly just one of the three); they now play Springs, Cornwall Hill , Heronbridge, Northcliff, etc.
    .
    2. Having said that, Northcliff, which was always pretty decent for a Jhb co-ed school, has upped their rugby program even further via good coaching and a stronger fixture list. They are now hammering other co-ed schools that used to give them close games – e.g Sutherland last weekend. Remember that Northcliff has produced the two Tshituka brothers and Darrien Landsberg.

Hule sal eers teen Waterkloof moet wen.

There is a big annual derby in Graaf-Reniet between Volkskool (Dutchies) and Union (Souties), which is over 100 years old. I seem to remember that the overall win/loss ratio is in favour of Volkskool, but not by a massive margin, so the fixture is mostly competitive. I believe that the whole town comes to a standstill, so a large crowd attends the rugby.

About ten years ago (on another rugby blog) a blogger said that his dad was Union’s 1st XV coach. His dad believed that the Union 1st team would be good that year, so he wanted to test them against strong opposition early in the season. Given that Union is a tiny school (30 boys per grade) with only two open teams, I was very surprised when he said that they planned to travel down to Paarl to take on the HJS 1st XV! 8-O A week later, I was even more surprised to hear that they’d only lost by a point or two to the mighty HJS! 8-O 8-O

I must say the Waterkloof win over Garsfontein to me was a big surprise. I thought that Waterkloof was a banana peel for Garsfontein, but never expected that score line…Die Anker also surprised me, I was joking and big mouth more in hope than actual expectation…

Ja, ek onthou daai verloor teen Die Anker in 2013, die manne was redelik verleë daaroor. En ek moet sê die SA Skole senter (2012) was nie ‘n skadu van die speler wat hy in vorige jare was nie.

BV se 1ste span word afgerig deur Frikke Spangenberg (voorheen by Noordheuwel) en die huidige skoolhoof, Mnr Jan van Staden, wat wel voorheen by Monnas was. Hans Coetzee wat lank by Monnas was, rig die o14’s af so ver ek weet.

The Kearsney vs Westville game was over as a contest quite early on with Ville building a handy three try lead and showing a their ability to attack and finish from anywhere on the park. Their forwards also seemed to shave Kearsney up front.
At one stage the score was 34-3 to Ville. It had the potential to get worse. Just like last year’s game, Kearsney made a good fightback and scored the last three tries.
The KC backline players that came off the bench looked more confident that the starters.
Veenstra is a top tackler. I would have liked to start him at 13 with Madat at 10. But the truth is KC needed a few Veenstras to contain Ville today. Needless to say the Ville 13 Satade had a good day which included breaking tackles.

I watched Rondebosch vs Paarl Gim.
Felt like an even match in most respects but Gim definitely left points on the Tinkie Heyns – ball dropped over the line in the process of dotting down, ball ruled as knock on in the process of scoring, three reasonably easy kicks missed.
First two tries by Gim were off the charts good and started from deep inside their own half from turnovers. I think the Bosch supporters will be disappointed with Freek de Kock’s brilliant opener as several would-be tacklers looked like they were playing touch instead of tackle rugby.
Lots of yellow cards in this game. At one stage Gim played against 13 Bosch players. I don’t think Gim scored but not an idea situation for SBR.

We were very good defensively and looked very dangerous on attack, particularly in the second half. Everything just seemed to work today. I expected a win but not as convincing as this I must admit.

Good evening, I’m from the UK but watch SS Schoolssports every Saturday on satelite. Just wanted to say how impressed I am with SA schools rugby. Skill and attitude are superb.I know its not really my business but I’m a rugby man of 72yrs and this is as enjoyable as it’s been for me. ( except for the 1974 Lions).
I’m supporting Affies, simply because they seem to be on most. Keep well

Look, the memory is fading rapidly. I remember the 2016 team quite well (it was my youngest’s matric year), after that not so much as I became less involved with the school.

The last couple of years things fell away somewhat, and they’re in a building phase (much like HTS Middelburg I guess). They did gain one Hans Coetzee by a stroke of circumstantial luck, who is doing some good work from what I’ve heard. But it’s a long way to the highs of 2016…

Lichtenburg 29 – 19 Klerksdorp (home advantage counts at least 7 points here)
Die Anker 18 – Ben Vorster 24 (sorry Oud Anker, a beer if I’m wrong)
Grey High 25 – Queens 20 (home ground advantage also counts 7 here)
Marlow 14 – Nico Malan 19 (tight game, but a tight year for Wolramme)
    Kingswood 26 – 16 Brandwag (more pain Burning…watch)
    Pietersburg 30 – 38 Wesvalia (Clutchdorp’s best)

There’s a big game in the EC. QC has to keep penalty count low as Grey will look for the corner and maul. I’m not sure what happens, both look good lately. Just annoyed at that Durbanville loss as we were the better side. Unfortunately losing close to 10 mins due to an injury on the field with time ticking with our tails up killed our momentum.

@Beet I see Glenwood doesn’t have a fixture this weekend and DHS playing KZN development which means the 1st/2nd team and A team’s aren’t playing. I think this should have been the weekend DHS vs Glenwood game should have happened if the powers that be could just come to an arrangement on this issue. KZN needs this fixture back.

Drostdy Donkies by 20, Stellenberg by 20, Boland Landbou by 3, Paul Roos by 30, Paarl Gim by 20, Milnerton by 30 minimum,Garsies Bere by 10, Noordheuwel by 30, EG by 40, ,GCB by 20.

Do not know how to rate KZN schools, as it seems just like their Lost Outpost teams of yesteryear who took 100 years to win the Currie Cup, or Curry Cup maybe, most of their rugby is played in the pub, by the braai and by reminiscences on social media about outliers, but not on the field.

I presume you referring to Westerford. WRT Gimmies, they thought they could just rock up & win comfortably but theres a lot of pride in all the teams nowadays. You have to be on song from the first minute. Halftime came along, Pieter kakked them out, scored 30 add points & game set match. Unfortunately the Southern Suburb schools results depend on the amount of injuries they get during the year. Depth in certain positions is sometimes almost non existant at these schools & at the moment SACS have too many to stand any realistic chance of an upset.

    MIDDIES VS MIDDELBURG HTS

    @OUD ANKER (Comment #23)

Let’s ask Old Affie for the stats…. I’m sure @MiddiesPa will have the real stats. What I do know is that when HTS was that powerhouse as recently as 5-6 years ago, they did not play Middies, since the quality gap (dare I say) was too big….how things have changed, since Middies have beaten HTS a few times now in recent years.

Don’t know Melkbosstrand particularly well. I grew up in the Boland and I have extensive family links there, so I’m more up to date with the goings on in the Boland league (Charlie Hofmeyr, Robertson, Worcester Gim, etc.). The Boland school and (especially) club rugby scene is really something to experience. In Vredenburg, for example, the Vredenburg-Saldanha club regularly get full-house crowds. For years, Boland Park in Wellington was also full for club games, but empty for Boland Cavaliers games!

    It’s a long list…
Haven’t seen Melkbosstrand on here for a while. Who are their usual opponents and are they in the SBR archives?…will try find them. @Deon or @Snelvuur, @Ploegie…what do u know of them…I hadn’t heard of Charlie Hofmyer till a few weeks ago either. There are many many more schools playing decent rugby, including Dinamika, Brandwag, Hans Moore, and Oosterlig up here in the highveld…Krugersdorp High?… I went to an early season game at King David Linksfield where half the games were stopped due to a magnificent electric thunderstorm…then played under lights after the storm was over..big hearts, not always massive players. Also saw a big early season bootcamp at Trinityhouse…they have a neat clubhouse too.

Cannot agree with you more. The wellbeing of the children counts nothing for these bureaucrats.

Agree – also with all the other comments below about trials. At least 80% of the teams should be known – why risk your known selections to injury? Where unsure, yes play those guys in a trial to confirm your reason for inviting them.
That implies you invite them – not asking schools who they want to send. Meaning they have actually watched games. Similarly coaches could veto if someone is not invited.

Where would we get scores of the derby over the last 20 years? HTS were a powerhouse in the 90s and early 00s

Groot derby die naweek. HTS Middelburg teen Middelburg.

You are correct, they have provided good sides some scares, going as far as beating us in 2017 in what was a rainy miserable day. That 2017 Bennies matric group were a decent bunch, every year was close against Jeppe with them since u14 until the win ultimately in 2017.

Bennies as far as I can recall have always liked a challenge, even if they know they’re maybe biting off more than they can chew, like in this case against KES, if you want a fixture with them, they’ll give it to you. They’re also relatively close to Jeppe and KES in terms of distance so I think to them it’s a case of “there’s nothing we can lose”.
As for what has gone wrong, I really wouldn’t be able to tell you. I’m not close to anybody from the school, but this is the worst I’ve seen them.

Glad to see Springs Boys High taking on St David’s, who themselves are much improved.
Curiously, in about 2018 before Covid, I saw KES very narrowly and fortunately, in the dying minutes of the game kick a penalty to sneak past St Benedicts 26-24…the year before they had beaten Jeppe too.
What went wrong? The school implemented some bold educational changes and restructuring which sounded at the time like good ideas but side effects of which are now being felt. It takes 5 years to realize you’ve destroyed something very promising. Still SA’s Top Boys Rowing School (20 consecutive years), and been Top 1, 2 or 3 Swimming Schools for a number of years now too.

Very Annoying and frustrating method…I would rather they just get those guys down to HQ for what the yanks call a ‘combine’ …measuring their strength, agility, speed etc. and looking at a few non-contact drills…maybe I’d do 3 or 4 live scrum, 3 or 4 live lineouts, same with a few live backline moves…but totally agree that a trials game is madness.

Saints are not great this year. Lost heavily to both Queens & Jeppe & lost to Hudson! They only want to play 1 of KES, Jeppe & PBHS in a year. This year it was Jeppe, last year it was PBHS…..guess what, when they want to play KES we might just say no! Their rugby will never improve with this attitude.

Well said about trials! An absolute waste of time & effort. If the selectors don’t know their teams by now, we have to ask what they have been doing. And with all the streaming now, it’s even more ridiculous that they don’t know. Not just a WP thing; Gauteng & KZN have the same crazy system.

Strange because Saints this year are decent-ish. Not at all saying they’d beat KES but they’re definitely better than Parktown and Bennies.. Wonder why?

    NW JEPPE

The NW Jeppe game will be a massive test for NW. Jeppe have to travel this time to us, and may be a bit tired, but on rankings are a superior team. Either way a great test for NW. I just hope no real injuries as NW run into Glenwood and then Old Boys Day against Maritzburg College, before having to tackle Westville, and then DHS and Glenwood again.

North vs South in the Cape this week.
Bosch vs Gim / Berg vs Landbou / Sacs vs Roos
All held in the Southern Suburbs. Some very interesting match-ups.
What’s also very interesting is to see how many boys are going to be unavailable for Craven week trials this week due to the some big games already played this past weekend & now some more this weekend. Its crazy to think in this modern day that WP still believe in barbaric trial matches in the middle of a season where the boys are already struggling with knocks & niggles. These boys especially among the forwards smash into each other every weekend & now are expected to do it all again in the middle of the week, forget the fact that they have Matric exams coming up soon as well. Lastly no one knows what time they playing in the trial match so they all have to be there at say 16h00 & sometimes sit on the sidelines for up to 3 hours in the cold waiting for their turn to play. The only thing that can come out of that is injuries. Madness. Surely they have seen enough of the boys this year to pick their sides & no doubt the selectors have already collected their gifts.

St Benedicts vs KES? Yikes, God have Mercy – Bennies are lower ranked than Parktown.
