Noordvaal Cup – Klofies vs Monnas in the “quarterfinal”

It’s do or die, Waterkloof and Monument will battle it out in a sudden-death to stay alive in the Noordvaal’s premier cup competition when the two macro schools meet in Pretoria on Saturday, 12 August 2023.

Monument are the favourites to beat Waterkloof but it is much easier said than done. The winners will progress to the semi-finals of the competition, while the losers will claim a very credible fifth place on this year’s log.

Even though EG Jansen, Garfontein and Helpmekaar have booked their places in the knock-out stages, the permutations for the semi-finals are far from complete.

EG Jansen without doubt have been the surprise package of the compo. They have been overachievers, playing so well! Who would have believed they would still be unbeaten at this late stage in what has proven to be a competitive top 6 if one includes Noordheuwel who offer stiff rivalry.

Garsfontein are the tournament favourites. The Pretoria high school is enjoying arguably their best ever season in their short history dating back to 1988. Only one defeat nationally, means they are a top-3 school on the South African rankings this year. A first Noordvaal Cup title since 2016 would go down very well as the icing on the cake. That said, the odds on Garsies winning must have been narrowed drastically since the start of the third term, with the Bere beating both Helpmekaar and Noordheuwel, but unable to assert their authority in either game, which ended up in close, high scoring affairs.

So EG Jansen, the table-toppers, host Garsfontein who are single point behind them in second place in Saturday’s last round of the round-robin matches. The winner claims the prestigious top spot for 2023 and then plays…???

Well if Monument beats Waterkloof, one has to assume that they will get the bonus point as well, as the Witbulle have had no issues scoring 4-tries per match in the Noordvaal co-ed derbies this season, then Monnas finish third and the semis are:

Winners of EG vs Garsies vs Helpies
Losers of EG vs Garsies vs Monnas

However if Klofies cause the upset on home soil then its likely to be:

Winners of EG vs Garsies vs Helpies
Losers of EG vs Garsies vs Klofies.

On the other end of the table, it’s sad news for Menlopark. They are all set to be relegated to the Noordvaal Plate for 2024. It will be a difficult road back to the premier league. Menlo has the money and rugby resourses but they need to start building a much stronger rugby culture that produces at least the 11 teams needed to hold one’s own in the “Cup”. With parents of rugby boys blessed with so many close-by options for the sons such as Affies, just a stone’s throw away, the comeback trail will be infinitely harder.

@Rugbyman: die game tussen EGJ/Garsfontein was baie professioneel, skoon, harde rugby. Nie een rooi of geel kaart en ernstige besering nie. Sterkte vir die semi finale.

@Kaya 85: Yes, EG outscored Garsfontein on tries. If you can remember that intercept – would have been 37-12 but changed to 30-19. There was no ruck and no off-side, so … Had it not been for that intervention the score would have bee completely different.
Nevertheless, Garsfontein managed to beat EG at EG, Helpmekaar at Helpmekaar, Noordheuwel at Noordheuwel with a third to half of the team on the injury list.
But that is where depth counts, so there should be no complaints – and the new guys played really well.

@Kaya 85: Like everyone we also have our injuries… we were 5 light on our starting pack on Saturday. The boys still stood up and made it count. No excuses, no complaints. At the end of the day we made it to the semis and that is all that counts. Looking forward to a great game on Saturday against another quality outfit. Enjoy the week.

@Djou: and EG outscored Bere 6 tries to 5…that early first half Penalty goal+ long range try from the kick off won it for G-fntn…kicker very composed and accurate…the EG chaser bumped his head I think on the catcher’s hip…KO…and Bere scored. For all their massive pack, G-fontein only dominated the first 10 ?mins….

@Kaya 85: Also interesting is that the Bere and the Jansies are both unbeaten in the Noordvaal.

Garsies had that epic test match against Grey College in Kimberley while EG haven’t won at the festivals they attended outside of the old Transvaal this year early on in the season – Kearsney Easter Fest and Wildeklawer. They seem like a different beast now though and they already have a cup title to their name in 2023 – NWU Sportsreeks

Dis indrukwekkend want Noordheuwel is ‘n goeie span.
Garsies gaan moet speel anders kry hulle dalk ‘n groot telling teen hulle. Sal maar sien…….

I have to wonder how Garsfontein and EGJansen will approach the big game on saturday. Both already have semi finals spots. The winner of the two will have the final on their home grounds if they reach the final. A massive game before the semi finals also have a chance for injuries. Also EGJansen under 14s will make the semis if they beat Garsfontein in Saturday. Good luck EGJansen. Looking forward to this one. Waterkloof Monnas the other game of the weekend. A definitive 1/4 final.

This table provides interesting perspective on school strength through the teams and age groups. Nr 1 & 2 way above the rest on that score, with very little difference between 3-7. Some teams have not played all the games, but it is an interesting model to judge real school depth. Could be applicable to other regions …

Ek hoop Garsfontein sal na die naweek darem opskuif na die 3de of 4de plek overall. Ons lyk nie goed daar in die 7de plek nie. Behoort darem meer as die helfte van die halfeindrondtes te haal in die verskillende afdelings.

Thanks for the info and insights Beet. EG Jansen are going to be a tough tough one for Garsies on Saturday. Going to be a fantastic game…Worth going out to the East Rand to see this game…Who knows why EG put up scaffolding in ‘Front Centre’ of the main Stands…so if you sit on the left you can barely see the right side of the field and vice versa…which is why you will find me on the far side, no seats, standing by the west side 22m line.

When people are talking about rugby dying a slow death. Just look at how good this years schoolboy rugby has been. Arguably the toughest Top league tournament with 6 teams that could beat each other on any day. Last time the competition was this strong was when it was an open Comp and any school in Transvaal could battle for only one winner. I think maybe 2003 ?

Look how close the World Cup is this year, you can put your money on one of 7 teams and you will still have a good shot.

I am having the best rugby season as a coach and supporter in my life, the game is far from dead. Thanks @beet for giving us this platform to enjoy our opinions on the game.
