@phat55: Nice article. I am so proud of this group of us. From A to C team, they showed Saturday what they are made of. None of those C team boys would let an A team down. Even the lower teams have some realy good players. Can’t wait for 2015!

My seun was self amper in Outeniqua.

REG OF VERKEERD, DIS KLAAR GEMAAK.

@BuffelsCM: I will agree with the comment about the top school in the province being neglect by the selectors but this is something people should bring up with SARU where they can make decisions, if they ever do. I do believe that they should have people from other provinces as selectors or people from the unions, not teachers or coaches from schools. That is just wrong man.

Nothing people say or do now would make a difference.

@MAXDAD: I know the players have been picked and we can do nothing about it. I agree that we should not try to spread negativity but if a player does not deserve his place, how can we justify that ?
I still maintain my point of view regarding the nepotism about the one player’s dad !!

By the way, do you really think that the top team in the country only deserves one player among the subs ?? So, like you’ve said: ” If you play in a winning team, you should stand out”.
The player mentioned above really did not stand out at the trials. I saw him walking around for the last 10 minutes doing nothing.

I have no personal interest in the team. I have no son in school but I know quite a few unhappy boys who had been overlooked

@phat55: Regarding the positions that are being filled, there is nothing we can do to change that.
Regarding the comment that was made next to the field, there is nothing that can change that.
I still believe that this is been taken to far, remember this is a blog and everyone can go back and read everything from the beginning. The changes that we know each other is even greater, but one thing I know is, don’t get involved in something you can’t handle.

If you play in a winning team, you should stand out. Just remember, it’s the team not you. If you take a great team and split them up into 15 other team, would they still be as good. Not too sure about that.
I believe we should stop provoking people and start giving positive feedback for the 22 players that are in the team.
Or are we going to be like a newspaper that only sells because of negativity.
I know that this blog will probably come to an end once everyone start being positive. Then there will be nothing to feed on.

    Still a good idea thou

@Predator: Toe my seun in graad 7 was het ons (ek en my vrou) saam besluit dat ons seuns nie perde is wat op veilings moet vekoop word nie. Ek sal jou dit se, As die kinders skool gaan waar hulle bly sal die groot naam skole baie swaar trek. Dis ‘n guarantee.

@ maxdad – the nepotism was in reference to wilfred cupido’s kid who fell out after 2 rounds of trials and then at the end was just “brought back in” to make the academy team, also clearly not being the best in his position and also jerome paarwaters kid whose selection is a joke. shameen adams story is more cronyism  his son is not even in the top 3 for his position in the cape and on Saturday against PRG was nowhere to be found after some boisterous commentary from his dad and friend who chose some savoury words at some of the PRG frontrow.grown men talking like that to 16yr old kids on a rugby field geez…….

@BuffelsCM: @phat55: When I spoke about the comment made about nepotism it was actually directed to @Phat55 with the comment on 28 May, 2013 at 16:43 said: “the nepotism is scary! Shameen Adams and his USN products has gotten him sum clout amongst the WP selectors I see bcoz his [edited] is an absolute joke! its a shame that the top ranked u16 school in the country cant get even one player in the starting 15 for WP.”

Not sure if he “PHAT55” has a personal grudge against Shameem or his son?
What I can tell you is that NO-ONE likes to hear things about their children. Hopefully this is not a grownup and if HE/SHE is, I certainly hope that the children doesn’t read his/her comments. This is why our children have so much aggression because they hear the parents and think its ok to behave that way.

And then they are still hiding behind a alias.
My opinion is that when you make a comment like that behind a alias that probably only your friends know who you are, you are spineless. And all the people that like to make comments on something like that should all be in one place where they can feed off each other’s negativity.

Ek gaan niemand blameer of vingerwys nie.

@phat55: I think the problem of not being a “traditional rugby school” is the fact that you don’t get invited to play against top schools from other provinces. Locally we only play one or 2 of the bigger schools. E.g last year we played Drostdy, Wynberg and Boland Landbou; this year SACS (pre-season friendly) and Bishops.
Our U/16s are quite special but you need to do well across all age groups to be able to play the better schools.

@MAXDAD: Skielik verstaan ek hoekom die ander provinsies so maklik WP se talent kom wegvat.

My son was selected for the WP Elite squad and once they returned to the trails he fell out in the first round. Not even considering playing him in a different pack or game. That was the time where I had personal grudges against the WPRU. How do they select a boy for the Elite squad and spend so much time, effort and money and he doesn’t even make the next round. This is when I realized that there is a lot going wrong at WPRU. Losing great players and also having very angry parents. This won’t be the first time and I guarantee you it, won’t be the last.
This brings me to another serious point where lots of you are mentioning parents and boys by their name like Shameem and Ashwyn Adams.
Shameem is a body builder and as far as I know he never even played rugby so how can you make comments where his son has nepotism by the selectors. I’m also sure that all of you making comments like these are also great coaches and selectors not even understanding the game or the rules. If someone did not make it this time round, are you going to through your toys out of the cot and give up? Stand up, dust yourself off and try again, as my own son would say.
Seeing that most of the comments (complaints) come from the Paarl side I seriously think it’s time to start a WP Country Districts Union side and then most of the problems would be solved.
OR WOULD IT??? Probably not!!! They will fight in their own union and still disagree amongst each other.

@phat55: I get what you’re saying about playing the top teams more regularly! Unfortunately I haven’t seen much of the big teams but the loosehead that you’ve mentioned did not impress me at trials.
From what I’ve seen the Boland tighthead is better than the Gym one – but that’s just my opinion.
As a former member of the front row (the only row lol!) I know how effective a good “unit” can be.
The players that I’ve mentioned went through the trials and were regarded as the best 2 but were discarded when it mattered. So what is the use of trials ? I guess I should not ask you about that – I think we are both of the opinion that wrong choices were made

@phat55: They have played all the local teams bar PRG, Bois and Gim since u14, ask the boys who played against him and the tight head, Carlo, what they think. You can only play what’s in front of you, and all those opposing tight heads are now very familiar with their arses.

@BuffelsCM: the paarl gym front row(which has a GK tighthead) was destroyed by the PRG front row recently! ive seen the bellville redhead at trials and he needs to compete at a higher level on a more regular basis.Salie from what I know has played this year against Monnas,Waterkloof,Centurion,Grey PE,Bishops,Rondesbosch and Paarl gym to name a few and has definitely been the better prop each time.maybe you should also consider who the prop plays on a weekly basis…….the country’s best or 2nd tier teams.coz the top team bellville plays is Bishops if im not mistaken and thats of course my opinion.

@phat55: Unless the selection process is changed by enforcing the proposed idea on one of the previous articles, I don’t see anything changing. I honestly can’t believe players such as Salie of PRG and Smit of Bishops have been excluded from the squad when it is obvious that the players that have been selected for the GK WP team, are no-where near as good as the players that I’ve mentioned..

Sad to say, I don’t see anything changing :(

@if it doesnt challenge u it doesnt change you: Is it because of the mystic “challenge” contained in your name that a flanker plays prop. The “challenge” . Or is that the only place where he could fit into the team? A flank can get seriously injured playing prop you know. Kind of a specialist position. Not a good excuse either.

@phat55. Agreed. PRG’s players aren’t skillfully better than the GK players! Ja PRG doen uitstekend as n span .

@BuffelsCM: luister. Duidelik weet of julle niks van PRG se o16 span nie of julle lewer net kommentaar omdat jul seuns nie gekies is nie. PRG se o16 individuele spelers is nie nasten by so goed sos die grand khomo spelers nie! PRG is net goed as n span. So ek sou se.

Best thing about watching rugby on the Farm is that once the 1st team game commences, the entire school bar the 15 boys on the field, reserves and a couple of water boys, are seated on the grand stand. @jmh0101: The one from Paarl Gim is Momsen. His son is in the Academy side. If daddy is a selector, coach or WP official, there will always be questions when your boy is selected. Momsen, Wilfred, Jerome, last year Chippie, etc, etc, etc. The selection committee must be neutral.

Hopefully it is now clear that we have no influence over the number of players that are selected for the teams, other than entering them in the trials.

@Balikibaba: small correction,PRG vs Bishops score was 26-12.after watching that game I thought the bishops centre would at least be in the setup as he is an extremely strong runner.
those saying that rankings mean nothing……you are definitely correct, the current no1 team in SA got there because they are made up of average players & that must also be the reason why the are unbeaten since end of 2011.
One gets the feeling Mr Cupido picking 10 PRG players out of the starting WP 15 last year has caused this years exceptional team @ PRG to be snubbed completely! like Ploegskar said I think,he sold them down the river so that his own son could make the academy team.what an awesome maggot he is!

@Balikibaba: Agreed on your 12, he was a standout against Bellville and all the parents remarked on his quality during and after the match. Having seen most of the u/16 teams in action, Paul Roos, Boland, Bosch and Bellville are the best in my opinion, in that order, and only providing 6 of the 22 reps is a joke, whichever way you look at it.

@bhkgpa: you only have to watch a couple of these teams in action to understand that in this case the ranking does indicate where the best players reside. I have seen Bishops and Gim’s u/16’s in action this year and Bishop’s centre should be a guaranteed selection in the WP team. Gim should maybe have 3 players in the team.

@bhkgpa: I agree fully. Team performances should not be the criteria. These Provincial weeks were meant to showcase the best talent. Obviously so many obstacles have now gotten in the way of this but wherever possible selectors must look pass school, team achievements etc and pick players on their individual ability then work hard to make a good unit out of these talented individuals.

(Obviously I’m also not suggesting selfishness as a characteristic when I say individual.)

    So, let’s work this out.
Paul Roos have basically smashed everyone, but have yet still to play Boishaai.
Bishops lost 24-16 to Paul Roos, beat Boishaai and drew with Gim (by all accounts Gim were lucky to come away with the draw in the end although they were leading at half time). By this logic, Paul Roos should walk over Boishaai who also got a 40 point thrashing from Grey College.
So, between 2 schools, that by all accounts have every average u16 teams, they have THIRTEEN representatives. Between the 2 schools that have beaten them (yes also a draw) there are TWO!
I don’t watch much u16 rugby as I am not in the Cape, but I do follow Bishops u16. The biggest travesty of justice is that the Bishops centre, Cornel Smit, who many at Bishops rate a future star, and who ran circles around all his opponents this year INCLUDING the 2 Gim centres who have made it into the team, has not even made it on the bench. Disgusting.

And don’t even let me get started how the number 1 u16 team in the country can only have ONE player….and that on the bench!

Something is VERY rotten in WP Schools rugby!

Davids and you all have no idea the amount of effort they put in 6days a week, theese two players are extremely skillful and have tons of heart! Zain DAvids is over 95kg and is one of the fastest and hardest runners in our school and you will be seeing him in the future! and although Shameen is Ashwyn’s dad it may or may not have an effect but he definitely deserves to be there and so does L. Greenhalgh, J.King, P.SLubbert and K.Ballikistan, but there are definitely other players that are always better! the U16As+Bs at RBHS are the best they have been for many years and we are currently 4th in the country for this age group! I agree Paul Roos is by far the best team and should have way more players there! but come watch Paul Roos vs Bosch on Saturday! they might thrash us…but i rate we will give them a challange!

@Ploegskaar: Yes the better tighthead was from Boland and has made the bench only. In the final 10 or 15 minutes at the Bellville trial games he was moved to loosehead with the Boys’ High prop (who did not make the team) at tighthead. My feeling is that the Boland player will spend more time on the loosehead than his favourite side during the GK !

Wow! Have never seen such a thing in my life and I feel sorry for those boys that were wrongly left out of the squad and their distraught families and they can absolutely feel hard done by.

That said, let’s not mention names of boys who have made it and say that they don’t deserve because I’m sure they don’t pick themselves. They did what they had to at trials and were somehow selected.
Let’s just wait and see how WP does at GK and if they get pummelled then the coach will have a lot of explaining to do. No reason to do badly with the no.1 side in SA in your background.

KZN too has its selection problems but now quite like this and we’ve pretty much accepted what’s happened simply because IT HAS HAPPENED.

@phat55: You know what is interesting is the fact that at the final trials – before the 41 players were selected – there were 4 teams. The said prop played in the C or D team. I am not saying it disqualifies a person from selection (having started in one of the lower teams) but neither one of the A and B teams’ loose head props were included in the final group of 41! Does it sound reasonable ? I say NO !! They were and still are the 2 best loose head props !!

Ploegskaar mentioned the one redhead from Bellville above. There was another loose head of Boland Landbou (of the B team). Both are comfortably much better than the one starting.

I can’t believe MZ Davids of Rondebosch is not starting at flank. He had an excellent game on the day. I congratulated him when he was taken off. I was sure that at that stage he was already selected for the starting team – obviously I’m wrong and know nothing about rugby.

I can only reiterate the sentiments of the Paul Roos supporters about their team only having 1 representative in the side.

WAT ‘N KLUG !!! NEPOTISME HOORT NIE IN RUGBY NIE !!! EK IS SO TELEURGESTELD IN DIE KEURDERS. JAMMER VIR DIE SEUNS WAT HULLE PLEKKE VERDIEN. STERKTE OUENS – JULLE GAAN DIT NODIG KRY !!!

@Vleis: Agreed, a very good Boland side lost to them by one point a few weeks ago, and I was really impressed with the their skills and structures. Their backline looked like scoring every time they had the ball, while the forward were very strong in the set-piece. A travesty for sure.

I feel sorry for all the u16 teams that have to face PR for the remainder of the season. Not only are they facing the best team in the country, but they are now also facing a team that is more motivated than ever to show how terrible the WP selectors are.

    1 Paul Roos (1)
    4 Rondebosch (2)
    7 Paarl Gim (7)
    10 Boland Landbou (2)
    18 Bellville (1)
20 Bishops (1, geluk Jerome! geluk Wilfred!)
    21 Paarl Boys High (6)
    38 Stellenberg (0)
    46 Strand (0)

I cannot agree more. Not only is Paul Roos the best U/16 team in WP, but is currently ranked no 1 in the country – above Grey Bloem and Affies. They have not lost a game since end 2011.
The boys were snubbed from the first set of trials already, with all sorts of silly reason as to why certain players did not advance. This is indeed shameful, and I hope that these selectors can honeslty look at themselves in the mirror and say ‘We picked the best team, and treated everybody fairly’ I doubt it. Maybe because PRG did not have anybody in the selection committee. This is a farce.
I reckon that the PRG team will beat the team selected….

Voorwaar ‘n prestasie.

There is definatly something wrong here!..Paul Roos has by all accounts the best u/16 team in WP…They beat Paarl Gim 27-6 and only have 1 rep on the bench!…Paarl Gim has 7 and Boishaai 6!…Only 1 rep from an apparently very decent Bellville u/16 team?…Very strange indeed!..
