As the fallout after the exclusion of Western Province centre Dawid Kellerman from the SA Schools team continues, a suggestion that nobody from the SA u18 Sevens players was considered for the 15-man team, seemed incorrect, based on the selection of Celimpilo Gumede and Muzi Manyike.
The South African under-18 Sevens team departed for the African Youth Games in Algeria on Sunday 15 July 2018, where they hope to defend their title and book their place in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, which will be hosted in Argentina in October.
11 of the 12 players in Marius Schoeman’s squad were members of the triumphant side that defended their Windhoek International Sevens title in March, while the only player who did not take to the field, Campwill Willemse, was among the travelling reserves.
On the first of three match days, Schoeman’s team will play hosts Algeria and Mauritius in their opening two matches in the pool stages on Thursday. The winner being determined on Saturday, 21 July 2018.
