    @Queenian: I’m not sure if the squad has been finalised yet but there is a listed team for the pre-season games. There are 8 elite players for the Academy this year : Koetzenberg, Esterhuizen, Bart le Roux, JL duP, Maritz,Kubeka,van Schalkwyk and Coetzee

    @Muzi: Yes I was surprised that the bleach blonde got a gap like that. I think his kicking attributes – place and out of hand had a lot to do with it. The Bulls styles of rugby clearly proves that they don’t need a superior distributor or a player that is able to operate on the gainline in that position.

    @Muzi: Louis Fouche plays the sort of brain-dead rugby that suggests he’ll be the short-term answer once Steyn departs for France with Pollard being groomed as a possible l/term solution (a bit early to make an assessment as he has not even played senior rugga yet). I also would not rule out the possibility of the Bulls importing a senior flyhalf – someone like Hansie Graaff.

    @rugbyfan:
    Morne Steyn’s terrible form with the boot last year certainly opened up the debate at 10 for the Bulls and Boks for that matter.
    Rumours continue to grow that he may decide to sign for Stade Francais this year after his contract runs out.
    Who knows maybe the Bulls have indentified Handre and Joshua as the two youngsters who have the potential to replace Morne.
    It remains to be seen if junior flyhalves like Fouche,Tony and Tredoux will have long term futures with the Bulls.

    The Bulls i think are maybe buying to many players maybe to make sure they have the best or to stop the other setups getting hold of them.

    As said by H Meyer a few months ago when questioned why the Bulls have signed both Pollard and Stander for the number 10 berth he,s simple answer was that kids at school level did not always turn out to be the stand out players at say 21 years of age and he beleived that either one of the 2 would be that player in 3 years time.

    Got to admit no fault in his reasoning have watch both Pollard and Stander quite a few times in the last 2 years and they are really good, Pollard this last year was brillaint but i still beleive that Stander has a rugby brain second to none so let us see if Meyer is right.

    The risk is that both players might be spoilt by been at the Bulls

    @Moneyball,Beet,Muzi,re the signing of under 18 year olds.
    Justin Philipps got various offers since 2011 from the Bulls and Sharks.WP sent a letter to the Bulls stating that they will start negotiations with him according to what SARU requires unions to do.He decided to go for WP.Vermeulen and Shickerling signed and sealed their career with WP already.Gelant and van der Merwe signed with the Bulls but will regret the figures they signed for at the end of 2013 ,because the Bulls offered them peanuts,compared to what their market value would have been in 2013.Gelant got tricked into signing with the Bulls and the ethics displayed by their recruiters were shocking!

    @CyndiAtRugby: Thanks. I changed Dylan’s stats.

    Very tricky situation. Senior rugby has a limited number of places and pro rugby is generally unforgiving to players that fall behind in development, yet all these youngsters somehow have to find a way to be as professional as possible and still find time to keep on top of academies.

    The Sharks have just lost their 2.08m tall under-19 lock for this exact reason. He wants to give rugby a full go but realises that he needs something to fall back on just in case he is one of about the 80% who don’t make it passed junior rugby. He’s going to Maties next year.

    Had the 3 Glenwood 2011 boys pressed on with academics up at Tukkies with the option to represent the Varsity at rugby, it would still be viewed as winner-winner but the fact that 2 are already back home, makes it seem like the Bulls might have pulled a smashed dreams stunt here. Anyway the full truth will come out shortly.

    JD Schickerling and Vermeulen have definitely signed for WP .It was scholar contracts in which they also commit to join WP after school.Sad that a talent like Gelant will have to compete with Francois Venter,Jan Serfontein,Rohan Janse van Rensburg.If he does not play 15 at Loftus it will another career that the Bulls will end.
    Saru legislation states that a player from the age of 16 can be represented by a SARU registered agent,but also that a players home union must have an oppertunity to offer a contract before an agreement can be signed with any union outside of the one where the player is at school at the time.For eg WP can sign a player without any notification if the player attends a school in WP.

    @Muzi: Surely there can’t be 2 opposite rules in play. A player like Galant has a school contract. He and his mom signed on the dotted line for the Bulls. If the likes of Vermeulen and Schikerling are still fair game then surely Galant and van der Merwe have to be as well.

    That is also what i thought from what i know concerning Justin Phillips Xander had first option to sign him up but instead Justin Phillips decided to choose WP.Same goes for Galant and Duhan SWD just could not match what the Bulls offered.
    The Lions also give out scholar contracts remember the situation with Stoney now i heard Vean Roodt is in the same boat.
    Jacques Vermeulen,Daniel du Plessis,Rikus Bothma and JD Schickerling are still 17 years-old but maybe the WP scouts have a verbal agreement or for that matter those 4 grade 11s might have have already signed junior contracts with WP.

    @Grasshopper: Jacques got unlucky at the Bulls. He was all set to be the undisputed first choice u19 hooker then Theuns Reynolds transferred in from the Leopards (after he lost something like 8kgs in pre-season due to Pukke traditions – well so the story goes). Next thing Taylor was starting every other game but by the u19 compo halfway mark Reynolds was the clear no.1 choice hooker and started every game thereafter. I’m not sure what Taylor’s next move is as it’s believed he rejected a small contract offer from the Sharks. He was definitely one of those players that showed a tremendous amount of potential as a schoolboy

    @Muzi, thanks for that info, very sad for Dean, Jacques and Ferdi. I was told Jacques was playing really well. Anyway, I hope they keep their heads up and try and make it at other franchises. They are too good to fade into the oblivion, unless they have let themselves go that is. Hopefully they surface at the Sharks somewhere…..

    @Moneyball: @Muzi: I thought the requirements were that the home union had to be informed and that the parent had to co-sign with the player if under 18 in order for the contract to be valid. Isn’t that how the Bulls got Galant?

    @ Muzi : If the Bulls like quick props who can get around the field, Mxoli will be able to that as he used to play Flank in u16. His scrumming is also pretty good. He’s also pretty strong. I see Zondi went WP, good move IMHO. Will be able to fit in well, as they like mobile props.

    The Sharks Academy coaches are doing a brilliant job when it comes to developing props who can scrum very well.
    Sadly not the same can be said about the Bulls junior props when the heat is on their scrumming techniques are found wanting.
    Bulls generally like props who can run and get around the park our main problem is scrum time.
    Meneer Ludeke got a rude awakening this year our tight five struggled as a unit in the scrum against tougher opposition.

    @Muzi: @Griffon: I think Mxoli has hope. He has decent size at 1.80m and big legs. His ball-carrying skills are good and he seems useful in support play, perhaps some good work on his scrumming technique is what he needs most. The Sharks Academy is a good place to be to learn to scrum well. Mxoli’s decision to leave was even a surprise to the guys at the Academy but I guess the Bulls put a better offer on the table and possibly the study options at Tuks were more to his liking.

    Let alone the Bulls have 3 SA schools props and Bannink IMHO he’s going to battle to even run out at loftus B field bro it’s the money players sign without thinking.

    Duncan is talented but IMHO he will battle to even make the match 22 that’s how much depth Paul has next year.
    The Thabo Mabuza story makes me a little sad apparently the Bulls wanted to move him to hooker due to his lack of height but i’m happy he made the right decision to join the Lions.

    @Grasshopper: I heard that Ferdi was also surplus to requirements. This is a pity because of the Glenwood KZN schools trio I felt that Ferdi was the one who could have made a difference to the Sharks u19 season. At hooker we had Morne du Plessis and Warrick Venter and at inside centre we had the likes of Gareth Meikle and impact player Chieza as well as mostly unused players like Mike Berhardt and Sphu Msutwana as cover. However once Johan Meyer broke down in pre-season, a big sized useful l/fwd like Ferdi might have come in handy. Jean Pretorius was a good player but picked up regular injuries, one of which sidelined him for a while and it seemed like David Fisher did a good job in the backrow once he moved from lock but he too got injured along the way. The Sharks had to import a player from Pretoria – Kirk Twine as cover in the backrow. Would have been nice if it was Ferdi.

Was also told by a MHS insider that Hartman missed out on going to WP Institute but going to the Bulls. Very surprised that Mabuza not a Bulls player. Anyway I have made the changes.

    @ Muzi : How do you think Nqoba Mxoli will fit in the Bulls structure, with top props to compete against.
    I heard that House has a contract like agreement with WP and UCT that sees their top players going there every year.

    @Grasshopper:
    Unfortunately Dean Moolman and Jacques Taylor were released by the Bulls both of them are back in KZN.
    I will find out more information regarding Tukkies student Ferdi Horn he might be also leaving loftus.
    Shaun Adendorff is highly rated by the Bulls management like his good mate Wiaan Liebenberg he’s one to look out for in the future he played well for the Bulls in the 7’s Premie League Tournament in George.
    Ja speedy loose forward Carel Swart is a good signing but he needs to work hard like Shaun there’s lot’s of competition at the Bulls.
    With names like Chris Massyn,Thabo Mabuza and Corne Cooper available for Paul Anthony one really hopes young swart applies himself i watched him this year he was not that impressive like in 2011.

    @Muzi, any news on Dean Moolman, Jacques Taylor and Ferdie Horn? Are they castaways or still in the squad? Also, is Shaun Adendorff still featuring? I see a few Glenwood boys are heading up that way again…..

    @beet:
    It’s all good bro i wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Stapelberg signing for the EP Kings.Remember they have financial muscle now.
    Bulls have Kobus signed now Radebe IMHO should not join the Bulls look what happened to poor Andile Jho.

    @Muzi: Thanks Muzi. I have updated the list. Neil Maritz was a bad miss. Have known about him for a while now. Also changed Ernst Stapelberg. Apparently nothing confirmed about his future yet. With Kobus Marais at the Bulls and the possibility of Innocent Radebe heading that way, it would be wise for Ernst to keep his options open.

    @Playa:
    I want to clarify this just because i’m a bulls supporter it does’nt mean i agree with what the Bulls do when it comes to schoolboy contracting and player management.

    For example i still don’t understand why the bulls released a player like Marnus Schoeman?

    Without a doubt Xander and Werner are passionate about what they’re doing in terms of player recruitment.
    Do i agree with the amount of players they sign every year?No not at all.

    I wasn’t praising the Bulls scouts yes forginve me maybe at times i like to gloat about the quality players we sign :mrgreen:

    @Muzi: SARU needs to step in here.The Bulls cannot be allowed to do this.They are killing the sport and the boys’ careers.

    Geez i guess it’s true my god the Bulls are aggressive when it comes to contracting schoolboys.
    It’s a pity because some of these players will never even run out at loftus. :-?

    From what i know Paarl Boys High centre Neil Maritz has also signed for the Sharks.It’s not yet confirmed but i think EG Jansen’s scrumhalf Johan Labuschagne has signed for the Lions.

    Apparently the Bulls are also after Grey College schoolboy EW Viljoen,Saints flyhalf Innocent Radebe and Grey College Prop Ruan Kramer.

    I wouldn’t be so sure about Vean Roodt joining the Bulls apparently he has a lions scholar contract. :-|
