Well done to the two boys of EG Jansen. Nico peyper SA Schools and Stassen SA Schools A side. Both brilliant rugby players with some good prospects for the future.. I think one or two other EG Jansen players were very close contenders.

I cannot understand how Cornel Smit from Bishops hasn’t made it. That has to be one of the worst ommisions I have ever seen. Terrible terrible omission by the SA schools selectors. He was the best back at craven week. The angles he ran, his excellent passing and thinking at 12 were second to none. I’m absolutely flabbergasted that he hasn’t made it. SHOCKING

@BOG: When you talk about next year, I would agree that a better year should be on the cards. There will be a number of players in the mix for SA Schools. And you are absolutely right about the man at the helm. I am however concerned about a strange philosophy displayed by some.

@Slam: How does that work? Let’s assume GCB did a Glenwood and poached all the Louis Botha black CW players when they were in Grade 11. How would GCB have arrived at more SA Schools caps this year?

@Slam: Its something that I have tried to explain, clearly, unsuccessfully. To “add colour”, as you say, it would require some dictatorial rules at the school. Rugby is not the first choice of learners of “colour” in the FS or other inland provinces. If you look at the soccer teams at Grey, they are probably 98% black- and that is their choice, and they do so, freely.

@Tang: craven week sides need to meet criteria and Grey College cannot fulfil that which results in a number of Louis Botha kids being selected for the Free State side. If Grey College want more representation at Craven Week which will enhance the chances of their kids getting selected for SA Schools then they need to add some colour to their 1st XV side.

@Pinotage: And then, on top of it, I believe that he has not been first choice in his position. But let us see what happens next year. But I agree, even from afar, I have detected some “negative vibes”.@Tang: The story of other schools having “caught up”, is common. That would necessarily mean that GCB have stagnated and that is most unlikely. Anyway, I think that the success which Grey has had, runs much deeper than just coaching, but to explain that to someone not associated with the school, is impossible. They have over an extended period of time, always had the odd bad year or two, but if you are still regarded as “top 10”, even in the bad years, it says something about the school.@RuggaZ: He shouldnt be a problem. He himself, is an OB and familiar with the culture and traditions of the school.

Congratulations to the boys who made it.

After following this blog for 3 years, I cant help but wonder how many Bloggers have actually played Craven Week, or higher, and have been in these boys shoes?

The amount of hard work over years that these boys have put in is almost unimaginable unless you have done it your self or supported your son whilst he was doing it.

The boys all read this blog and some Bloggers on here need to keep that in mind before they make stupid comments. It certainly isn’t funny for the boys who didn’t make it.

@griffon08 many of those “quota” players mentioned above make it on merit but unfortunately I must agree that there are some that don’t. I just feel sorry for the merit players left out as well as the quota players that will never know their true status. In my opinion, there is no need for this any more.

I wonder how much this squad would change (or would still be included and excluded) if the qouta system was not in place. Surely enough quality quota players to make it on merit. Always wondered how it must feel for a “quota” player to never know on what basis he is making it on.

@Bush: I hear what you are saying about Palvie and those aspects of play will need to be developed if he wants to make it out of school. I am just saying on his performances at CW, I felt he put his hand up to make one of those squads, not meaning the starting 8, but certainly in the squad.

Mafu as I have said before, is a fantastic player and a good 8, but I disagree that he outplayed Palvie in the EP vs KZN game – Mafu won the first half and Palvie the second half.

I did not know the boys name, but this Cornel Smit, WP 12, did not make one of the squads either 8-O 8-O 8-O I thought he was a shoo in, based on his performance in the final

@RBugger: Morning, I don’t understand the hype around Palvie. Great Ball carrier going straight. But aren’t your Props, Locks and one Flank the hardcore carriers. Don’t they do what Palvie does. Didn’t see him jumping in the lineouts, the game against EP he was fantastic but the EP 8 was a little better. Wiseman, I think not starting on day two and him missing his MHS jumper in a few lineouts on day one. May have cost him. Well done to all the players and the players that went to Craven Week what a privilege

The day we don’t debate selection is the day we know there is very little talent. There probably is enough quality to select a ‘C’ team and that speaks to the quality of players we have at schoolboy level. Cornel Smit is an obvious shock exclusion but there are also others who were unlucky. If history is to be believed we will see the ‘unlucky’ guys in 4/5 years time still playing top level rugby. It’s all about character from here on in for the unlucky ones. So many school boys give up because of a very short sites approach to life.
I wish all of the boys selected the best of luck going forward.

Congratulations to all the young men on their selection. Enjoy the experience. Particularly happy for Kwezi Mafu. I predicted at the beginning of last year he will play SA Schools in 2015 and again in 2016. The move from the Bulls back to EP did not affect his chances negatively at all.

What i is see looming is a competition within a competition, amongst the 2 SA teams that is. Common opponents will be England and Wales. Lets see who performs better against the same opponent. Maybe that will be the motivation the guys need to really give it to the tourists this year. Both teams.

How about one more fixture to be added, SA Schools vs SA Schools A? I am sure they will play a warm-up match against each other, light contact of course.

Wow, I know not everyone can get selected and the job is tough on the selectors, but how the hell did the KZN Hooker and Palvie not make one of these squads – a bit ridiculous to be honest. However, next year they have the u19 Currie Cup and the whole SA Schools thing counts for nothing there, so head up and keep moving forward.

@Vleis – I can never get over the irony of Boland schools being the biggest contributors to Western Province teams. 10 of the 12 are from schools in the Boland area.
The Bulls/ Lions/ Valkes are certainly missing a trick here. I think it is high time we have a Gauteng CW side. Send the top 3 Gauteng teams to CW and the next three to Academy week.

Well done to all – and I agree – a few people I thought would be good for one of the teams not there – but without knwoing many of the other provinces – it seems like apart from total WP domination – we have a good crop of youngsters.

Well, the selectors have made their choice, obviously only after classifying the boys racially, to meet the legal prescriptive requirements. But congratulations to the boys who are in the team and all the best to those who did not make the cut. The latter group should remember that there will probably be more, or at least, as many professional players from their group, as from the teams in a few years from now. Using the two teams as a guideline, GCB has actually achieved remarkably, thus far, by loosing some of their matches by such a small margin and secondly, that they have almost no chance in some of their matches still to come. Lets see what happens

Well done to those selected. for bothSA Schools Teams teams!

I have read the blogs and say what you like, I know there are always the unlucky ones…but unfortunately, sometimes this goes further and if I was Cornel Smit, I would sit back and wait for the offers to roll in,’cos they are gonna come fast and furious.
A more decent and honourable rugby individual, playing at the highest level of SA school rugby in our country has to offer and after witnessing his obvious astounding skill set, both last year and more impressively during the past week, he was clearly just leaps ahead of the pack and the best inside centre on show during the last week. He must feel pretty glum right now and many reputable Provincial and ex-bok players that were present at the 2015 Craven Week, are gobsmacked at his exclusion.
Kudus to you and your EQ levels young man, your time will come.
Those that pick the teams have their work cut out and there is no merit in apportioning blame on the selectors, as they have the toughest job of all….but watch this space….one of the best Inside centres in terms of strength, vision, side step and goal kicking ability has been left in the abyss after the 2015 competition. The decision must have been a tough one…rubbish…if this was NZ, he would be a baby black practicing a new Haka by now!

I trust that this year the WP Rugby Union have managed to stem the annual raid on the WP talent coffers and have held on to the players that WILL make a difference and add value in the next year or two….surely WP Rugby must be tired of funding the Bulls and Sharks squads year in and year out??
Please WP, develop a spinal cord and stop our best player exodus and ensure that WP secures the services of the best players that of the Boland and those from the other Souther Suburb Schools each year.

A great week for the WP team…brilliant performances against EP in the final and hats off to the coaches and backroom staff and the entire WP playing contingent….Lets get moving on the new apparel for the new season and focus not only our fitness levels, while also embracing the logical approach to a work-out year and in many cases, lets salute what

All the best, If I am still stuck, then we will male a place to collect…cheers nag
    Ian

@Pedantic: I was laughing in disbelief at the selections, and then noting that there are going to be some very unhappy bloggers. So, to clarify, it is the selections (particularly for the ‘A’ side) that I find laughable, NOT the misfortune of others.

Of course there will be some really disappointed young men and parents, which is always a shame.. They can still hold their heads high for having made an impression and remember it’s not the end of the road. On the other hand, there will be some very happy kids who also played their hearts out, who now have an opportunity to show SA what they can do.

@Rugbymal: Haha, I especially find people like you humorous, people that rush to insult others instead of trying to understand.. Thank you for the offer though ;)

Just remember these boys did not pick themselves…there will always be unlucky ones and everyone will have their own opinions and favourites. Al we can do now is congratulate them and wish them the best of luck representing their country.

Well done to kids selected… kudos to the two Jeppe boys in the team. Very pleased for those boys. Eish but now we gonna limp home in the last 4 games of the season. But huge opportunity for kids hope they make something of it for themselves

@RuggaZ: Not sure that’s funny. Disappointing for a lot of the boys but congrats to those who earned it.

Not one KZN forward, very fishy! Well done to Bader & Dahl. Palvie, Wiseman, Sissink-Clee & Klopper must be wondering how they missed out!
