Queen’s College Easter Tours

From Queen’s College
A record number of teams from Queen’s College, in Queenstown, participated in various rugby festivals throughout the country over the Easter Holidays. The Queen’s College First XV and Queen’s College Junior U13A participated at the KES Easter Festival, whilst the U16A took part in the Jeppe Festival and the U15A and U14A teams took part at the Grey High School Festival in Port Elizabeth. All the teams performed admirably and managed to win all their fixtures against their various opponents.

Queen’s College First XV vs. Northwood (KES Festival)
Northwood started the game in the best possible fashion and managed to put Queen’s 7 -0 down after the first two minutes of play. The Northwood lead was however very short lived as Queen’s replied almost immediately with a try by the lock, Ntwanambi, which was unconverted. From the next restart after some great interplay between the backs and forwards flank, Kuyler, scored the second try for Queen’s College which was converted by Wagenaar. Van Heerden scored the third try for Queen’s from a great back row move and the try was converted by Wagenaar. The final try of the first half was scored and converted by Wagenaar for a 26-7 lead at the break. Queen’s allowed Northwood to score an unconverted try after some poor defence. The fifth try for Queen’s came from a misdirected kick from Northwood, which allowed the Queen’s backs to counter and Sotyelewa to score in the corner. The try was converted by Van Heerden. Ntwanambi scored his second try of the match, which was unconverted, after receiving a great pass from the backs to see the lock storm 25m to score. Hooker, Heidtman, scored the next try for Queen’s after a pick and go close to the opponents try line. Masoka scored the final try of the game from a penalty move on the opponents 25m line, which was converted to take the score to 50-12 in favour of Queen’s College.

Queen’s College First XV vs. Parktown Boys’ High School (KES Festival)
On Saturday Queen’s clashed with Parktown. The match was a very physical affair and no quarter was asked or given in this game. The local boys were the first to open the scoring and took the early lead 7-0. Queen’s eventually managed to settle down and apply pressure on the Parktown defence. Queen’s were awarded a penalty, which was kicked into touch, and at the ensuing lineout Van Heerden crashed over for the opening try which was converted by Wagenaar. The second try for Queen’s was scored from a lineout drive and saw Van Heerden score his and his team’s second try. Captain, Oranje, made a sniping break just before half time to score his team’s third try. Parktown were only able to add a penalty to earlier try in the half to make the score 19-8 to Queen’s at half time. The second half of the match was characterized by a lack of accuracy by both teams, and some senseless kicks. Parktown managed to score an unconverted try from a penalty in the second half and the only points to be added for Queen’s was scored by centre, Du Randt, after a brilliant individual effort. Queen’s won the game 26-15.

Kes in front of a partisan crowd played like men possessed and totally dominated the opening stanza of the match. The hosts opened the scoring with an unconverted try and were then successful with a penalty to take an 8-0 lead. After the playing under immense pressure Queen’s slowly found their rhythm and managed to score two penalties to reduce the hosts lead to 8-6 at halftime. @Queenian: Ludz will be there. If by some miracle, Eastern Cape funerals have evolved and stopped being a whole day affair, I may just take a drive there from King and catch the 1sts. But I’m not counting on it.

@Playa: My son lost to QC Under 14A 14-25 on Saturday they not to bad just a bit small, last year as Under 13’s them and Dale 1 game each so should be close.

Was impressed with QC Under 15 have a big mobile pack which not sure were they come from as last year in Under 14 they were small.

Under 16’s I think QC will be to strong for Dale.

    Looking good QC

I will have a very close eye from a distance for the u13A & u14A games vs Dale. Those should be close…very close.

We might get pipped in the u15A game.I suspect we’ll be blown away in the u16A encounter.

KES Queens was a great game with Queens just pipping KES at the end. KES will rue their missed opportunities in the first half though as well the missed kicks.

Well done Queens – they never gave up

@Wyvern: I watch that Under 13 team in Pretoria a week earlier were they played 5 games and won them all as well they are really a very good team and if QC can keep them I can see a un beaten 1st team in 5 or so years.

Must say what I have seen is that Queens rugby really seems on the up which is good for them. Not to say they were down and out but the next 5 or 6 years looks promising.
