Live on TV: HJS Paarl BH vs Grey College

With the exception of unfortunate first choice fullback Henry Immelman, who picked up a nasty looking injury against Affies a couple of weeks ago, Grey College will have a full strength team to take on Boishaai in Paarl on Saturday. The game will be televised on SuperSport 1 at 14h00.

The long term history between the two schools shows that Grey has dominated the Galpille but in recent seasons, the boys in blue from Paarl have been the second most successful team in SA against Grey College, with Affies’ back to back wins in 2012 and 2013 placing them at the top of the list.

HJS are without no.8 Charl-Francois du Toit for this match.

@Andre T: Dis hoekom ek Shakespeare lees. Presies so gespel.

@Andre T: “Many a true word is spoken is JEST” – Guliemus Johannes Shakspere, aka as William Shakespeare in moderne letterkunde. By Simonstad staan ‘n beeld van ‘n hond genaamd Jest Nuisance. Nou weet jy wat beteken “jest”!

@Tandem: Your assumption that both Grey’s u15A centres are new boys is incorrect.

The improvement that I mentioned was based on the result of the u15A match in comparison to last year. Tacking into consideration that the boys had to travel +-900km also has a definite influence on the results of all the teams in all age groups.

I reiterate that the development at Grey is at such a level that all the junior results will be reversed by the time that the current junior teams are at u16 and u19 level. The current and past results between the two schools prove this as well.

@BOG: Bog I promise you that this will be the last time I will react to any of your remarks but please allow me the following . Firstly I am not disappointed in my team , please don’t judge me by your standards . Secondly regarding my “stupidity “.
Why do you need to get so personal if someone disagree with you ?Last year the 014 teams played in 6 games and Boishaai won 4 and Grey 2 . Boishaai scored 155 points and Grey 78 . This year the teams ( now o/15) again played 6 games and Grey lost all 6 . Boishaai scored 200 points and Grey 52 . So not only did these teams who are in your eyes making progress lost all their games but Boishaai scored 45 points more this year and Grey scored 26 points less . The average scores over the last year’s 6 games was 26-13 in Boishaai’s favour and this year 33-9.You are reading progress only in the fact that the o/15 A team improved their score which is a very dangerous assumption to make . Your junior teams also won no game in the 0/14 group and only
2 out of 6 in the 0/16 age group . Your 0/19 group did very well and time will tell if this will continue in the future . Your Cherries team who you claimed was the second best team in South Africa also was smashed on Saturday . These results does not make Grey suddenly a weak rugby school but the reality is that other schools perhaps should get more respect from you . Over and out from me . T

@Tandem: Are you still pissed off with the result? If you cant see that there is a massive improvement on the previous year, you are just plain—And what does the record look like in the senior sides, especially the firsts?. When are you going to realise, that what matters, is their skills level when they reach the end of their school careers. Getting distinctions in Gr 8 is nice, but it wont give you varsity entrance. Same applies to sport- its called development.

@Grey Brak: Exactly what I said in a comment which “disappeared”. But this improvement or trend is not that unusual at Grey, and of course, often the “accusations”of recruitment or addition is leveled. I like using Boom Prinsloo as an example. If I remember correctly, U 14 or 15 C, First team 2007 (one of the best), SA sevens, and now one of the very few outstanding players in the Cheetahs side. The fact that GCBs third team have produced 3 Springboks, is just affirmation of the quality of coaching and real development at Grey

@beet: I agree! The step up from u13 to u14 level is a big one and many take a while longer to adapt. Again though, I would like to reiterate that the coaching and exposure at Grey is immensely good for the development of rugby talent. It may sound biased, but it is a fact and it is evident in past and present results.

@Grey Brak: Given that background, I have to take my hat off to the boys. To get trounced at home and then reduce the deficit like that a long way from home, takes some doing.

U14 is sometimes like a carryover from junior school where size rules over all else, so that can be a significant influence

@Beet: Apparently the Grey u15 side only has one addition from the u14 team of last year which is really quite normal in any school side in modern times. The team does though look different from last year with a few players having physically developed in conjunction with a few positional changes, again, relatively normal in the transition from one year to the next at junior level.

@Grey Brak: This is a huge and positive improvement and credit to the players and coaches provided its all the same Grey boys who played for in the u14 age group last year, who have now lifted their game.

If however it turns out that Grey has gone out and recruited a few boys for their team, it removes a lot of the gloss from the achievement IMHO.

@Andre T: Mr T more man.
Lekker man lekker.

@BOG: I am actually very happy Bog , the boys played to the best of their ability and no one can ask for more . Just to expand on Andre T ‘s comment I am aware of the following junior Boishaai teams who won their games today ( there may be more ) . 14 A , B , C and E .
    015 A, C , D and F . 016 B , C , E . The Boishaai 014. A and B team scored 105 points between them and grey
15 . So yes Andre T you are correct the Boishaai junior teams did very well.
We obviously understand the main game is the most important score but that should not take away that hundreds of other boys also competed on the rugby , hockey and in other sports and activities like debate etc . This could turn out to be a very interesting game. HJS has had a chance to study Grey via a few of the Grey games being televised live but for Grey HJS is a bit of an unknown quality.

Against Grey good defence is key. The are bound to find holes in primary D so secondaries and scramble D. Also conditioning. Grey may be small but they have good upperbody strength and on top of that match fitness to last the full 70 of a high tempo game. HJS don’t want to be run off their feet.

Will be exciting to see what assets HJS has. Results suggest there is something special about this team. It might not be in the indvidual abilities but rather in the unity and understanding of their play.

This should be a very easy game on paper for Grey but as we all know, this is between 4 lines and on the day anything can happen. The lower under 19 teams however will struggle and Grey should easily win these games. The lower age groups can be very nice games to watch with Boishaai under 14 and 15 maybe the favourites.
