WP teen Cheetahs, altyd hard.

    @Koos Roos:

So pasop.

@Tjoppa: Eintlik is ek baie besig. My kopdokter het egter aanbeveel dat ek my met mindere intelegensie omring. Help glo met die selfbeeld. Lank gesoek. Hy se ek is nou baie beter. Hoe weet jy Spiestekkel is ‘n Wanker? Is jy ‘n voyer?

@McCulleys Workshop: Yes, you are 100% correct. Unfortunately, St Alban’s does not have much depth, so when they lose top players their performances drop considerably…and most of their top players were missing for the last part of the season, including their SA schools player and Bulls players.

I’m not close enough to the 1st team to know if there are any other factors.

met vergunning van Rugby365 die artikel!!
dankie vir die navorsing 365. Kyk net die verskillende skole in die onderskeie provinsies!!

This 2013 Craven Week is the 50th since the first in 1964. We record the players and their schools from that first Craven Week.

I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of JD starting at 5 ahead of RG for the SA schools team if he’s 100% fit.
Last year Handre Pollard got injured during the craven week all of sudden two montha later he was starting at 10 ahead of Eksteen,Van der Walt and Jordaan in the 2012 SA Schools team.

@Tjoppa: Fair enough, I can’t and do not have an argument on that – they should be the best. But, if Snyman plays ahead of Schickerling, as I can assure you they will pick Schickerling as a number 5, it will not damage the team. Schickerling is ahead, but Snyman will give a good account of himself – no doubt about that.

Schickerling is also coming back from injury and to be thrown into Test Matches will be tough for him – as with the Doops, coming back from injury is not easy

BHKPA: That is the thing, he has played SA Schools and has nothing to prove – would be nice to give the players at CW a chance to play in a test for their Country, I feel they have earned it.

It is also harsch on Schickerling and I feel for him, but like I said, he has been there done that and should now just concentrate and what lies ahead – the Big Boy ranks

We all know just how good he is and he will not be forgotten, he is there

BHKGPA: Yes, I have seen him play and he is blady good – Snyman and Schickerling are like for like players, Schickerling being the bigger built boy. To me, both players are number 5 locks not the enforcers who generally occupy 4. Schickerling is very skillful and an open player – he would be my number 5 but is it fair to pick injured players… I am not sure, some of these boys give everything at CW and may find it unfair if an injured player get picked.

Either which way, Schickerling is a known and has nothing to worry about – his future to date is set, SA Schools or no SA Schools

@Muzi: Agreed, Snyman is blady good and clever in attack – needs a big enforcer alongside him – Du Preez comes to mind :-D

@BuffelsCM: I do not think the training is as good as some make out or would think it is – I have been to watch a few training sessions, and it all looks based around power – gym work and ruck work – all power based really.

The guys seem to be losing explosive-ness, rather just relying on their heavy body weights to try and get through a tackle.

Also, the fitness does not look all too good – hahahah, have you heard some of the breathing on the refs mic – it sounds as if some oaks are on their last legs at times

Erg onbillik dink ek.

In elk geval, geniet Ladismith. As jy daar teen Barrydale se hoogte uitry, loer maar af na die rugbyveldjie en dink aan my.

@Muzi: That is the problem, as an 18yr old, his first thought is to make SA Schools regardless of whether or not he causes further damage – personally, he I was the manager, I would not play him – SA Schools is great for your pride, but in the long run, it is not the be all and end all.

@RBugger: I really hope Schramm has recovered enough to be able to play. As I’ve said after the first match (in which he only played for 35 minutes), he has impressed me a lot. Do you perhaps know if a SA Schools’ side will be selected or a group of players from which a side will be picked for the 3 “internationals” during August. If that is the case Schramm should make a larger squad.

A relative of JD Schickerling told me that the selectors will still consider him for SA Schools – or at least that is what he has been told

    WP vs Leeus

Ek is ‘n WP ondersteuner as SWD nie speel nie.

    @RBugger:
One thing I noticed with Linde when the game is tight he struggles to impose himself also on defence he was a bit shy when schraam ran at his channel.
Jurie thrives in open play I think he will have to get more involved senior rugby is not schoolboy rugby.

@Muzi: Yes, Vermuelen was awesome in that game.

The truth is, the competition for the loosies is massive – there are so many brilliant loose-forwards at this CW – you could easily pick 3 teams of loose forwards whoi would be just as competant at SA School Level as the next.

It is a shame we do not have the same amount of competition at centre or wing

A good looking SA Schools team – but the Doops will be there!

It is a massive shame Schramm got injured, as he would have been my choice at 8 – there are a lot of good, strong number 8’s – but in terms of the full package and excitment he brings, Schramm looked potent. For me, him and Bothma ahead of the rest.

Julle kom mos PLAAS toe.

Without any disrespect to the Pumas, I do not believe that they are 22 points better than KZN. I just think that there is something that is missing in our camp. It normally comes from above and filters down. I do not see the team spirit and the hard graft coming through. We also seem to lack leadership and direction.
Having said that, I wish the boys well for tomorrow’s game and hope that they go out with a bang. May the best team win!

If he was chosen as the flyhalf for KZN (debatable whether he is better than the current Kearsney chap) and given KZN’s performance I am pretty sure he would not have shone like he has with the Lions.

    May the better team win.

Gone are the days when KZN vs Border was the final game at Craven Week but I think a good showing by both will help all involved.

@Amalekite: I agree with you, in a lot of the teams their tight five did not do the hard rucking , everybody was waiting between the scrumhalf and centre to run the crash ball, maybe this was the gameplan,..but the teams e.g. WP,Griffons,Lions and Zimbabwe secured very good first phase ball,… their backline produced the goods in the end. I expected a lot more from the KZN team,…at least in the top 6,…maybe not a bad idea to get john Plumtree involved to lift the schoolboy level of play for the province,..there is some very talented boys, but as a team they just can’t get it together.

I have been very impressed with the spirit of the Lions side. They give me the impression of playing above themselves because of how tight they seem to be. You watch their team on the field together with their subs on the bench and you can feel the gees. That is how it should be.
I did not feel the same vibe when watching some of the other teams, especially the KZN side.
What do the other bloggers feel?
2 or 3 years ago when the Lions won the Currie Cup against a Springbok laden Sharks team, it was very similar. On that day, no team could have beaten them.
I also feel that the rucking and defence of the KZN side has been below par. It appears that all the ” ball carriers ” are watching and waiting for the ball to come to them, and all the grafters are sitting watching the game on TV. The “ball carriers” will always look better at trials, but we also need the grafters to win the ball.
Once again, what do you guys think?

Op party plekke in die wedstryd het dit gelyk soos BRAKENJAN ( all for one and one for all ).

@Grasshopper: KES plays 13 games, including three festival games plus three or four against strong Afrikaans schools….so that leaves six or seven games against the ‘weak league’ opponents that you bang on about. A large chunk of these remaining fixtures are against Natal teams (MC, DHS, WBH)…so I guess you are inadvertently trying to tell us that the Natal schools are weak. You may have a point there son. I hope for your sake that MC beats PBH in a few weeks to take the Grogper Cup, or you will be crying yourself to sleep!

@vicci: Goeie idee.

@Muzi: Gelant was the planmaker and anchor in the backline ,…such a pity, wonder if he would be considered for SA schools, or do you have to play CW. Human played better today ,but hangs on to the ball just a bit to long,.good kicking today. IMO Duhan vd Merwe is the best 11 wing in SA. Agree that Remu Malan was the better choice at scrumhalf. Warrick Gelant and Duhan vd Merwe was signed last year, also heard that 8th man Koen was signed by Province. He has not delivered his best yet, hope he fires on all cylinders Saturday. Wonder who the other boys are who was signed by BB?

The FS were doing exceptionally well until Kramer left the field. In fact they were dominant.I would have loved to see that front row against the Wee Pee, but of course with Ox at LH. Kramer will be in great demand and I hope that the Cheetahs have signed him. Louw will play S 15 in 4 years time and while EW Viljoen may not have had the best so far, he too, is destined to play big rugby. However, apart from the BBs, if there is a franchise able to destroy his game, then its the Stormers. Oh, and that last penalty was not one. Louw supported his own weight. But as I said, in the bigger scheme of things, there really is not much of a difference between rugby and marbles.

Hi, again Dylan Vlok was impressive I expect much more from 8thman Wihan Jacobs.
Innocent Radebe showed some nice touches but he was guily of making one or two errors on the field.
I thought Gerdus van der Walt was solid…..Erwin Harris has BMT he’s not a bad signing at all for the lions.
IMHO the lions missed Henson…Nyasha had his moments but Devon is a key player in that tight five.

I heard the Bulls signed 9 players from Outeniqua 8-O geez I think it’s safe to say to that the Bulls have another academy in George.
I was happy Duhan van der Merwe got a chance to spread his wings that boy is class pity Gelant was injured.
One has to admit Remu Malan made a difference to the side he combined well with Geor – one of my favourite players.
Little Human is a champ though he outplayed the higly rated Ernst Stapelberg.
I also enjoyed the number 8 battle between Deon Koen and Martin Groenewald.

Sal graag SWD teen Vrystaat wil sien Saterdag.

The only reason Innocent Radebe wasn’t playing in the black and white in this year’s CW was his hesitance about being away from home for such long periods of time, the idea of termly boarding didn’t go well with him. His parents were also pushing for the move, but decided to respect his decision. Such a shame :D

@Vleis: we were the post matric specialists, more commonly known as Red White and Grey! And the 4 post matrics a year, were funded by a particular Old Boy, not the school, after all who was the school to deny a pupil such an opportunity, cough cough. In the more recent events, I am led to believe from a most unreliable source, that the coaches package, um salary, was funded from Old Boy ranks, and I’m led to believe some of the extra mature acquisitions may have been, but that’s just interesting speculation. Both schools dish out about 10 scholarships a year to sport and academic recipients coming into grade 8. Bursaries are provided to as many as 25% of worthy scholars, mainly sons of Old Boys, some who are worthy entrants but can’t afford full fees, but it is not sports related. These funds are from Old Boys etc, bit it managed by the school or board.

My son’s tutor used to be the MH u14A coach and he said that MH does not participate in such activities at all…albeit they were the worst culprits about ten years ago.

A recipe to make sure you loose a rugby game 1) over confindence or too little ( players and coaches ) 2) playing players out of position for whatever reason. 3) too much structure. 4) too much focus on size and not balancing it with speed and agility at the breakdowns.5) playing injured players. 6) inability to adjust the game plan. 6) playing for something else other than the team.7) an unhappy team( dynamics in a rugby team is crucial )

@Queenian: Also there was no SA Schools team in 1969 as some people claim the team picked to play the British Universties touring team in 1969 went under the banner of the SA Inv Schools 15. And is not deemed to have been a SA schools team as it was not picked by the Craven Week Committee but by the SA Rugby board.

What the difference is I am not sure as they watched Craven week to see who to pick.

@HM: The Grogper Cup fixture list has been agreed already and the ISRF matches certainly do not count, as the schools generally bring experimental g11s and gr10s to the festival. Last year St Alban’s klapped Kearsney 1sts by 30 points, which would not have happened during the regular season.

@Speartackle: @Vleis: he, he, he, he – put these KZN pretenders in their place  I just hope the Union can hold onto some of these players – the number 7 for Lions was immense – is he a Monnas boytjie?

@Speartackle: I honestly do not remember. I had a few disagreements with one chap when the CW team was selected a year or two ago, but no big deal. All handbags at ten paces methinks!

@Speartackle: Dag se Mnr T. I see that the Grogper Cup has been explained already. So far, it is 6 all, with the game between Pta Boys v College (at College) being the decider.

@Grasshopper: Unlike Natal, there is no ‘league’ in Gauteng – e.g. St Alban’s has annual fixtures v Menlo; KES has annual fixtures v Affies, Menlo, Monnas, etc. By the way, a St John’s player was man of the match yesterday. Also, I’m not sure why you want to include Glenwood in the Grogper cup given that you lost at home to Monnas – a parallel medium school…much like Glenwood :-). Besides, if you guys couldn’t beat Pionier, what chance would you have had against the schools from Gauteng?

@Grasshopper: And the Lions were at full strength after their B team beat OFS on the Monday?

The fact remains……………..KZN can not make it into the playoffs unless they start importing boys from the Western Transvaal, Free State flats or Northern Cape Karoo. Tough, strong and agile boys brought up barefoot and grown strong by climbing trees, chasing cattle and carrying sheep. Not peroxided plastic Tarzans who’d much rather surf than get dirty. That’s why the Dup brothers are so tough…………………they’ve got that Western Transvaal dust in their veins

@Roger: They had to win the first game to get a good third game and with the CW rules had to play the weaker side in the 2nd game, just dumb rules or we have little depth…

The Grogper Cup decider is coming up. College vs PBHS. But agree with all who assumed KZN won it already. It’s a natural deduced thought process at work there.

@Grasshopper: hmmmm – bad planning by KZN management wouldn’t you say – putting out their “weaker” team against the Lions? Were they a touch over confident?

@Roger: Grogper Cup is a made up cup to see who was stronger between the Lions and KZN traditional English schools sides. It’s a mixture of Roger and Grasshopper. KZN went behind early on but surged ahead in the end, winning it by a game a think. Let’s just say the standard is pretty close. Yes, the Lions beat KZN on the 3rd day with our weaker team as the stronger team played on the 1st day. Also our captain was injured etc…..but well done to the Lions for bringing the players together better than KZN does. KZN is not prepared enough at these weeks…

@Speartackle: You see – this is what happens when you boycott the blog and then try and play catch up.

The Grogper Cup (Short for Grasshopper / Roger) was a head-to-head competition between ENGLISH schools in KZN and Gauteng-a-leng.

I can predict with clarity what your response is going to be…………

@Grasshopper: this Lions team is a good mixture actually – only one KES boy but given the season they had – not surprising. A few Jeppe, St Johns, Parktown and Saints boys as well –

didn’t follow the Grogper Cup – who won? KES finished the season by drawing with Monnas and PBHS and beating St Johns

To give the Lions credit, they play great rugby as a team. They look so well drilled! Your scrummy is potent, quick to each and every breakdown and gets the ball out. Big imposing locks, work-horse loosies – very good.

Your outside centre seems to get held up quite often? Is he perhaps a bit light for centre?

@Roger: Mostly Monnas players there, your ‘league’ with Jeppe, St Stithians, St Johns, Parktown etc is ‘weaker’ than KZN. Didn’t we win the Grogper cup even without Glenwood? I know you drew with Monnas, well done!

year in and year out the Lions are written off at Craven Week and yet they produce the good more often than not. How many “finals” have they contested over the last ten years? It is a tribute to the coaches and players because often, IMO, I don’t believe they get the selection right. You could see how much they wanted to win yesterday and prove a point. Fair play to all involved. Hopefully they can beat the Kings in the promotion-relegation game and get back into Super rugby and hold onto these talented youngsters.

Heh Grasshopper – not bad results for schools that participate in a “weak” league

So, 14:00 and 15:00 teams are the Top 8? For some the motivation will be to get a match on the A field on the last day, possibly only the Top 6.

@Woltrui: Yesterday it looked like the Valke game plan was different from that used by EG this season. Some of the big names just didn’t produce like they have been. Hats off to the Griffons tho, particularly in the first half. So well drilled.

Eish Mnr Beet, U was reg.
