Welkom Gim Downed but Not Out of the Kovsie Liga 2024

Bethlehem Voortrekker turned the tables on Welkom Gim, beating the top nationally ranked Kovsie Liga school 36-28 in the Griffons Liga final. Earlier in the season, Gimmies had claimed a narrow 28-26 win in Bethlehem.

Trekkers coach Justin Taylor is the youngest of the Tier-one head coaches in South Africa. His boys now advance to the Kovsie semi-finals, where they face an interesting opponent, Landboudal.

The Landboudal boere from Jacobsdal have made a bit of history by claiming the Free State Liga title after beating Jim Fouché 34-23. This follows the agricultural school’s victories over Bloemfontein stalwarts Jim Fouché and Fichardtpark earlier in the season.

As for standout head coach Roean Bezuidenhout and Gimmies, despite their defeat, they have a stay of execution. The reason is that 2024 is the Griffons’ year to have two teams in the Kovsie Liga based on the rotational system. So, Welkom Gim will face another surprise package in the form of Duineveld from Upington.

Duineveld secured their place among the elite by winning the Griquas Liga, primarily via a superb 14-12 win against the Wesgrow Champions Diamantveld. Diamantveld had only lost two other games this year, making this an outstanding conquest.
