# | SCHOOL | P | W | D | L | PF | PA | PD | |
1 | Paarl Gim | 5 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 209 | 68 | 141 | Gim found an unlikely hero in the form of MotM Manny Prinsloo. The wing’s two well-taken tries were key to the Paarl Co-ed surviving a major onslaught at Affies and holding on for a 20-19 win. For Affies it was the second home test match against Winelanders this season that ended in narrow defeat coupled with the hollow feeling that they had lost a game they should have won based on all the good things they did during the match. Next up for Gim is the first ever interschools against Grey College on the Jan Kriel Field. |
2 | Paul Roos | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 188 | 76 | 112 | At 21-17 up with 17min to go against Rondebosch on the Tinkie Heyns, the Maroons were in a battle of note. Composure and the will of their strong pack however came to the fore as Bosch imploded under the immense pressure. It ended at a comfortable looking 38-17. Next up, Boishaai at the Markotter. |
3 | Wynberg | 5 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 228 | 77 | 151 | Wynberg refused to succumb to N1 Fever when they visited Paarl Boys’ High. Psychologically they were in it to win it from the get-go and when the pressure got upped in the late stages, they produced the required character, slotting a fairly difficult last minute penalty to record an historic 30-27 win against Boishaai on Brugstraat. Next up is Grey High on Hawthornden in the Southern Suburbs. |
4 | Northwood | 4 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 107 | 22 | 85 | A bit of an uncharacteristically arrogant commentator’s curse saw the Knights miss a straightforward penalty late on, that might of handed them an outright win against a subdued Durban High School. The home team also missed out on a few half chances to stretch the DHS defence using width, in a match that involved a lot of tactical kicking and not enough flair. Nevertheless a very credible more than held their own 7-7 draw against strong opponents keeps the Knights in the conversation as an unbeaten overachiever and potential team of the 2024 season. Next up is Michaelhouse on the Meadows in Balgowan. |
5 | Marais Viljoen | 7 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 173 | 105 | 68 | Alberton’s Marais Viljoen caused a bit of a surprise by beating Rustenburg, their toughest opponents of the season to date 18-15 in the NWU Prestige playoff. It’s been a good confidence building start to the season ahead of the Noordvaal Cup premier division where wins including trying to do a double over Rusties will be extremely hard to come by. Next up is Krugersdorp’s Noordheuwel the semi-final of the NWU Prestige. This will surely be MV’s end of the road as far as the great start to 2024 is concerned. |
6 | Charlie Hofmeyr | 6 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 167 | 61 | 106 | The Charlies from Ceres escaped with a narrow 15-13 win at Hopefield, which just proves how hard it is to win on the road in the Boland. Their fairytale season sees them welcome Bredasdorp next week. |
In a bit of a surprise the NWU Sportsreeks defending champs went down to 45-38 to Waterkloof, thereby ending their 8-match winning streak. The defeat was not without a massive fight though. The Jansies of Boksburg were 28-0 down at one stage. They play Nelspruit at Eldoraigne in Pretoria next. | |||||||||
After winning six on the trot and beating 2024 headline news makers such as Jeppe, Garsfontein, KES and Oakdale (unbeaten until Boishaai), it was unlucky number seven against Wynberg. The defeat may also question whether or not Boishaai are playing too much rugby too early on in the season. They have a massive game against Paul Roos next. |
Only paul roos and maybe????? Wynberg to mention????
Update is that Marais Viljoen are up against Noordheuwel this coming Saturday so it looks like they will fall off the list.
Both PRG and Paarl Gim will face massive challenges this weekend at home to remain unbeaten. Four of the top5 schools having a go at each other. Would have made for a great double-header at Cape Town stadium – easy to see 30,000 spectators attend that. But why give away your homeground advantage?
Lekker Marais!!
