(Elo based).

@BlouLou: Probably playing better teams???, yes Affies lost 5, but to the top 5 in the Country for 2023 with only Grey being a blowout. I am not sure but I will put my money on that being the reason.

@Deon: just re: your belief that EGJ would move “up” because of their depth…alas no. Their u16 were decisively beaten by Menlo. And their 1st (and 2nd) team has at least as many Boland imports as a number of other NV Cup teams, if not more. I made a special plan to get out to Boksburg last week to watch Jansen, believe me, they can win NV Cup…that’s me on the stream, 1st half far side of the field on R…

@Vleis: Cornwall u/13 have a nr 4 player this year who I believe would have had a very good change of making the bulls craven week team, but I was told he didnt go to the trials as he is also playing cricket and the school is going on a overseas tour at the same time as the craven week.

These are not schoolboy rugby rankings, but schoolboy rugby first team rankings. To most by far the most important ranking, but “schoolboy rugby ranking” is a misnomer for this statistic. Schoolboy rugby rankings would look very different as it would impute the rugby depth of the school . Grey would fall down to I guess 6 or 7. Garsfontein, Hilton and Michaelhouse will probably be below 30. EG Jansen, Monnas etc would move up quite dramatically, and Affies too. That is the problem with schools like the private schools, where very few first team players’ parents can actually afford paying R 30 000 per month for what no-one can explain, 12 months per year, and thus the school’s first team rugby status is actually purchased, but further down much less is happening. So we should call this a first team ranking only.

@Asterix: Cornwall’s u13 cricket team was in the top 5 of the country in 2011. Two or three are now pro cricketers; however, they lost 10 of the 11 to Boys High and St Alban’s the next year.

@Asterix: I guess it depends on the strategy of the board of the school. Do they want the school to grow and compete with the larger monastic private schools, or remain a small niche school with the odd good year. Remember that schools like St Stithians, Bennies and St Albans were quite small until some 30 years ago.

I was on the board of a small private school seven years ago. I recommended that they merge with another new small private school (but with a lot of potential) but it was rejected by the majority of the board…so I understand the dilemma.

@Kaya 85: Cornwall hill primary doing well in the rugby but high school loses a lot of pupils to the other major schools. Cricket excellent at Cornwall but not the strongest in the rugby, I do however understand they are looking into changing that a bit and have made some plans.

@Vleis: Dont think they have a choice they need to be promoted, and I am not sure about the juniors but believe this year will be the best oppertunity to move into the 4th div of the A division. They dont really have the numbers to be competitive against the major schools on all levels. They have excellent coaches and a lot of money but the pupils is more the kids that stay in the estate. It is an excellent school however and really performing well in all theire sport and atop academics school.

@Kaya 85: Where the highschool is situated in the estates it is more centurion for me, the second new primary school “ridge” in the estates would for me be close to Ekurhleni, it is a very big estate.

Its has been bugging me why a team that lost half their games can still be ranked in the top 10. (Yes, I am referring to Affies but they are not the only one) BHP has them somewhere around 13th, but 4 other ranker has them in the top 10 still. What is the bias built into the formulas that keeps teams ao high although they have lost so many times this season?

@Kaya 85: @Asterix: If Midstream don’t enter the higher Noordvaal leagues, I suggest that they play all the Gauteng monastic private schools (GMPS). Midstream are at a similar level to the GMPS (perhaps a bit stronger at the mo); they’re also private and the GMPS have started playing each other twice due to losing fixtures v KES, Jeppe and Boys High….so a new school would be a welcome addition.

A few years ago, Midstream played St Alban’s with a loss the first year and a win the next year, if I remember correctly. Whatever they decide, there is no point playing in their current rugby tier and hammering everyone by 60 to 90 points.

@Maroon machine supporter: Midstream have an exceptional good 1st team this year but are unfortanetly playing in about the 5th league of Noordvaal. On current form I believe they will beat Menlo 1st team but not Garsfontein or waterkloof, but we will never know as they dont play even close to the same schools so difficult to guess, This years 1st team of Oos-Moot and Midstream would have been a good game in my opinion, they used to play against each other before the change of the new Noordvaal cup.

@Maroon machine supporter: Normally, Menlo would win, but this year would be interesting. I’d probably put my money on Midstream, as they have the confidence from an unbeaten season (I think) thus far, including huge thrashings of most schools that they’ve played – e.g. 92 to 0 v John Vorster, 68 to 0 v Wonderboom, etc.

@Grant: For these 1st XV rankings they are pretty decent.

I only found this out this year. The SASS ranking system is heavily relied on by school hockey, water polo, netball and soccer.

“They now have about 17 tournaments that are held in hockey, netball, water polo and soccer that are all based on SASS rankings.( All the tournaments that have the word “Top Schools” or “super” 12), the schools all had to have the ranking formula audited before using it.

However rugby is a different animal and the rugby community not so easy to please, …skin is going to be thick enough to handle the complaints.”
