Paarl Interskole 2018

The big one between Paarl Gymnasium and Hoër Jongenskool Paarl Boys’ High is on at Faure Street Stadium in Paarl again this coming weekend of 04 August 2018.

What we know about it, is its huge!

The vibe is amazing.

The field is generally in a kak condition given the time of the year, which along with the occasion often means you don’t get to see the best brand of attacking rugby.

That said, what you are bound to get is a nail-biting finish in a match where neither set of supporters wants to carry the tag of favourites going in – and understandably why – an average of less than 6 points per game separate the two 1st XV’s in over 100 years of competition.

Period Matches Gimmies Boishaai Draw Avg Points Diff

@odie15: there is an irony that the school that did not attend the festival (and whose supporters appear to have been not too supportive of the festival whilst it was held), will host it now. but suspect that overseas teams would rather want to come to the cape and stellenbosch with its infrastructure (and deep pockets even after steinhoff) can deal with the tournament provided of course kayamandi does not claim some of the rugby fields for its expansion plans.

Dis PRG hokkie se show piece.

Ek dink Gim moet hul wedstrydplan ondersoek voor volgende seisoen. Dank die Vader die seisoen is verby. Nou vir die Sevens.

@Human Piranha: Good observations. If I was the HJS coach I would definitely have earmarked competing on the Gim lineouts (most important set-piece in schoolboy rugby) to counter clean ball off the top to 12 and the maul, flooding the rucks to counter the effective Nieuwoudt and employed an effective kick-chase on the back three, who generally prefer running the ball back.

With regards to the PRG/Landbou game, the Boere did their school proud by all accounts, as they have done in all bar 2 matches this season, but sadly yet another season with 5 close losses with a 5 point margin or less. Hopefully the injuries that have plagued the age groups and opens this year will not be repeated next year and we can only pray that we get the bounce of the ball in a few games for a change as well.

@Ploegskaar: in my opinion, Boishaai played well in the following three areas that ended up being the difference in a game of small margins, firstly in the battle for the ball on the ground, they neutralized the potent Paarl Gim No6 fetcher, secondly they managed to dismantle the Gim maul from the line out which they had shown was their major weapon a few weeks earlier when Gim beat Outeniqua and thirdly the Boishaai 10 played a Very decent kicking game.

On another note, Boland Landbou played a blinder of a game against Paul Roos away from home. This is the closest any side has got to PRS this season in points difference. Well done to PRS for pulling through the win, but also to a game BL for running them close.

Well done Sean and team. Just rewards for your successful tenure at HJS and your positive contribution to schoolboy rugby at both Glenwood and HJS. From a neutral perspective it was pleasing to see the HJS team executing their pre-match targets to nullify opposition strengths so accurately, but on the flip side the naivety of Gim in critical match situations and field areas will leave their coaching staff with some soul searching during the off-season.

Just my final comments on inter schools. It was once again a great event, that was enjoyed by everyone that was part of the occasion, whether you are an old boy, family member, or just a supporter.

The week injects a huge financial boost to local bussiness, and there was, as usual, a fantastic vibe in the town. Many congrats to both schools for delivering such a spectacle.

    HJS vs PRG:

Vanaf 1976 van waar daar rekords beskikbaar is:

    Gespeel 44,
    HJS wen 25, verloor 17, 2 gelykop.

    Vanaf post millennium:
    Gespeel 19,
    HJS wen 11, verloor 7, 1 gelykop.

Congratulations to Sean and his team. We are really going to miss Sean not just for his coaching but more importantly for his ability to help jong men to grow and develop as humans. What a game, both teams were incredible, it was one of the best interschools I have seen. Like always it’s a pity somebody had to lose. Congratulations should go to both schools, every game Saturday was close and really special, it’s a privelage to watch two top schools compete in such a historical event with so much tradition. To the u/16 Gim boy that made that reducilous video where he claims the Gim u/16’s will win by 50, you should learn the history of interschools and I guess you were the biggest motivator for Boishaai.

@AbsolutMenlo: You won’t be sorry, Paarl is the biggest party in South Africa during interschools week. This morning we were talking about the week and one of my friends mentioned that he attended six braais this past week. It doesn’t matter who’s side your on the poeple are friendly and the “gees” is awesome.

The rugby year is done and I can’t wait for next year.

Sjoe Manne ! Hierdie was weer soos altyd n riller en n “Tiekie Aardbol” besigheid !

@beet: Boishaai in the last decade don’t thrash teams by 50 points regardless of their perceived strength or weakness on average. Their game plan for the season as a team usually will reflect that. There is the odd big score but the norm is a structured result. The Blitzkrieg in the 2nd half was exactly the same as vs Grey 2017. A team that’s been scrutinized & under pressure the whole year came out determined to put the season’s doubters to bed! Roos, Alberts, Neogh & Farmer were out there to playing as if it was their last game of their lives….as did the team but for me they stood out! Roos was a MONSTER awakened…

@boerboel: referring to pieter’s comments last year that the best team on the field did not win etc. but have to admit that gym’s rugby is very healthy given the b, c and d team matches they won through the age groups (and the u14 and u 16 a’s) – in the past that was not the case, but then again, in the past they always won the first team match.

Well done to Carl Snyman and his team! Stier, our 0/15s have really underperformed this year. I have watched all their games and they would have to lift their game by 200% to stand a chance. The Gym 0/16 backline is very good and the bigger field will suit them, unless it rains. I am looking forward to seeing whether they can perform to their potential on the big stage. 9, 12, 13 and 14 are very talented with a lot of pace. This team has had a remarkable unbeaten season thus far. Your 0/16s have however improved their form as the season progressed. Our 19 depth is not good this year so I expect our 0/19 B & Cs to struggle. Let the games begin…all the best for all teams from both schools, we contribute enormously to each other’s success…

Looking at the week so far Gim seem to have the edge but there is only one game that will count. I think it’s going to be a tight game considering the fact that rain is expected in the Paarl on Saturday morning. I think Gim has the edge and must be favorites but interschools is often the game where the underdogs perform. Gim has the upper hand at the u/14’s and u/16’s, the u/15’s is going to be very close and although Gim didn’t have the best results this year their u/15’s were one of the top teams last year and they have a lot of talent. Personally Boishaai might be slight favorites with the seccies but even there it’s going to be close. Good luck to both schools. GO BOISHAAI!

@Gimmie: losbal was commenting on the statement that the 150 year celebrations were “rampspoedig” bc the first team lost 4 matches – as if that is the yardstick. on this blog it may be, but definitely not how the paarl community assesses the school, the celebrations and involvement on all spheres of school life and its history. whether the rest of the country regards the match itself as only hype, that is their prerogative – it is like the difference btw the contribution the chicken and the pig makes to breakfast – one only contributes and the other is fully committed. 20 000 to 25 000 spectators on saturday will be committed. it will be gym…the premier interschools preview shows how confident they are.

Pity about the negative comments from Losbal, but not worth responding as there will always be people that feel the need to be destructive…My view on the 2 teams: Gym has exceeded all expectations this year. It is a team with very few stars, if any, but they are very well coached and play for each other. It should be noted that there are 7 grade 11s in the team and that our 0/16s lost by 30 points against HJS last year. In addition, the matric group lost comprehensively in all 3 age group years. They play a fast paced game with an emphasis on keeping the ball, which can be seen in the big scores they posted week in and week out. They have however been vulnerable defensively and concede far too many soft tries. As for Boishaai, I think critics have been harsh in stating that they are having a bad season as 2 of their 3 losses were against Paul Roos and Grey Bloem ( 2 of the best sides in many years). On paper Boishaai certainly have the stronger team with a massive pack boasting 3 SA Schools players. Their set pieces are excellent, they maul very well and they have a very good breakdown. There seem to have been uncertainty in back line selection which may have held the team back. A wet day will favor the bigger Boishaai pack but I think this one is too close to call. Good luck to both teams and I hope it will be a wonderful spectacle. Although we will be trying our utmost to break Boishaai s 3 year winning streak we all know that anything can happen on the day. It is remarkable that these 2 school can keep on producing excellent teams every year. The game of the weekend for me will be the 0/14As on Friday at 15h10, 2 exceptional teams very evenly matched. I expect Boishaai to win the 0/15 game easily ang Gym the 0/16A game.

BH was net nooit in daardie klas nie.
My voorspelling.

@Kattes-Strofes: Ek het verlede vrydag so proseduretjie by by my tandarts ondergaan..

H.. J.. S…… !!!

30 spelers + 16 PVs + 4 lyne + 70 minute = WENNER.
