I think if the Lions selectors stick to what they have done the last couple of years and use the same selection policy as before they going to be in for some nice hiding coming CW.
They playing Bulls tmr but they have same selector problems as the Lions. So will not indicate lots.

@kesoldboy I agree. Its been the Monument Mafia who have run schoolboy rugby in Johannesburg for as long as I can remember. Excellent players from smaller (and English) schools like Parktown, St Johns, have never had a look in. Even kes and Jeppe have only recently started to get more recognition for their rugby, with a sprinkling of other schools – quotas in another form perhaps.

@PRBoitjie: Ek dink ‘n goeie skool span is soms beter as ‘n saamgeflansde provinsiale span.

@KES Oldboy: The unfortunate reality in SA schoolboy rugby today (in my opinion) is that if you don’t go to a reputable “rugby” school, your chances of being selected for CW is significantly reduced or zero. I generalize, but I think selectors everywhere in SA carry a similar mindset as Die Ken in his (her) last comment above.

But you can argue both ways i.e. how do you compare a KES/Monnas/Jeppe flyhalf for example, to one from Trinity etc. etc. given the differences in their respective “leagues”.

There is so much talent in SA (maybe even too much??) but the bottom line is we don’t have the proper infrastructure/systems/resources in place to identify and maximize this talent pool i.e. like the Aussies

Must agree with most people here.
@Murrayfield: Menlo 9 is the best 9 I have seen SA this year. Garsie 9 also good as well as Kloof 9. Not seen the Affies 9.
@KES Oldboy: He was a good exception but it will be wrong to discuss the relevant problem about last year here. Chris Humphries must be the best u/19 flyhalf in SA at current. Just hope the Lions involve him in their junior teams.
@Die Ken: Yes my point the past few years. A good show at trials does not make u a good player. Maybe a lucky player. Too many yearly examples of small school players not making it at CW level.
From experience gained the past 2 years the Lions team could maybe change with 1 or 2 players (injuries excluded) but it seems 95% final.

As ek so kyk dan lyk dit my die OP het nogal n baie goeie proewe stelsel, om van aliwal noord af tot by meyer sauerman proewe te vorder moet jy deur 5 rontes proewe kom tot by 5 spanne vir o19 en o16 dan nog n dubbel ronte games by meyer sauerman proewe ook,om die meyer sauerman spanne te haal, is nogal n prestasie aan gesien die hele op streek se spelers daar verteen woordig word

@Die Ken: I hear you but did you watch Varsity Cup? The Wits flyhalf was brilliant and yet last year couldn’t make the Craven Week team because he went to Trinity House. I’m a loyal KES supporter but it doesn’t mean I want to see KES boys in the team if they are not worthy….

Please make the same mistake as the WP selectors of 2017 and pick talented players from KHS, Fakkel, Dinamika, Parktown, Vorentoe, Burger et al and see how they buckle when the game tempo and standard lifts

So Gauteng is the Monnas, KES & Jeppe show all over again. Can’t the selectors widen their horizon? I just don’t believe there aren’t better players out there at lesser known schools but they don’t get a chance.

My fokus nie by CW nie, alhoewel ek kinders jammer kry.
