Hope I got all these right :smile:
Well done to School for winning their final 2 games.
@grasshopper
I think the best KZN talent is split almost evenly while in other provinces the best go to certain schools.
In KZN rugby. And cricket its split.
But in polo,swimming,b-ball etc the best go to certain schools. Hence KZN having SA no.1 schools in all these. Sporys. I think the. KZN U19.coastal team will be. Very stroong with the likes of Wissing, Booley,Schlemmer,Smith etc.
@all black
Yeah most schools do go with youngsters at this stage.
I think we currently have 3 grade 10s and a grade 11 who is U16 (who came. From GW) in our starting XI.
These boys have been playing. For the team since term 1 and will shine in time.
It’ll be the same for College
KZN cricket is alive and well. Don’t think the other proovincces are as competitive. The top 5. Could easily beat each other on any day.
@Greenwood: I think there are plenty of guys with a huge loyalty to their school, we just have a poor work ethic :-)
College markets themselves as a Govt school with private school ethos and facilities. In some cases they have bette facilities than the private schools. College is R25100 fees and then R37,200 a year for boarding. Then add probably another R2500 a year for bus tours to KES, PBHS, Affies and the bigger ticket polo tours etc also come on top of that. (R6000 a year)
@All Black: Tullis – Tookie’s son. He is a good sportsman that, top hockey player as well (grade top 10 in academics!!). Great temperament and great genes from mom. We will see him in Green and Gold one day – I wonder where I could place a bet on that??
Top performers final day – http://www.hssm.co.za/news/cricket/kwazulu-natal/pietermaritzburg/2012/michaelmas-cricket-week-final-day
Great to have this “out of rugby season” blog
one thing that stands out here – there is obviously a relatively small bunch of guys that are hugely passionate about their schools – I have mates and work collegues who went to Westville – DHS and College and none of these guys show any interest in their old schools – my wife gets really peed off when my ex GWD school mates come for a braai and schoolboy rugby comes up – sort of “there they go again” other say a school is a school so what are we on about. Sorry for them !
My passion for my old school was re-ignited when the lightie started at GWD and I was astounded to see all the changes – an interesting comment was passed recently about the top Dbn Pmb and Highway State Schools as in this blog in that it was said they are “Semi Private Schools” – one even referred to Glenwood as a Dual medium School – go to a match there and hear all the Afrikaans spoken
I have a nephew at Grosvenor and at R600 a month you pay for what you get and thats’ no disrepect to Grosvenor – Glenwood is a shade uner R2700 a month
– not cheap this ! So lets keep rolling …….
@Gungets Tuft: Mahmoud, Tullis, Wormington and Zuma. Sorry 2 U15’s and 2 U16’s. I think Zuma is U16. Actually not sure now. One other boy whose name I do not recognize. wo strike bowlers from 1st term out this term.
@All, I think it was a tough week for ALL the KZN schools at Michaelmas. There were not too many wins and the competition were extremely good. Clifton were probably the success story from a KZN perspective. KES and Pretoria Boys High seem to have the strongest sides. Obviously KZN either are rebuilding or need to look at our cricket structures like we need to do for oour rugby. Well done to Westville at the Cape Week, some good wins. KES seem a formidible outfit with Pillay and Valli being stand-out. Do you know if they picked a team of the week?
@All Black: Well, nobody like losing, but it is a festival and the real work starts now against the traditional rivals, running into next term. Hilton, House, Westville and St Charles this term, I am sure that the experience the lighties got will stand them in good stead. Who were the U15’s?
@Gungets Tuft: Apparently the PBHS game was lost to some really poor shot making. Far too attacking and gave away wkts. College had played PBHS in the T20 a few weeks before and had no problem with their bowlers. A poor week for the boys. Close loss to Affies and St Andrews but both games should have been won. Unfortunately injuries have forced the selection of a very young side. 3 U15’s and and an U16 in the squad? Eish.
Westville beat Selbourne by 8 wickets to remain the only unbeaten team at the Cape schools week. Earlier victories included a 3 wicket win over Grey PE and a 221 run win over Dale College.I think they did KZN proud.
Glenwood Michaelmas Report;
On day 1 of the 2012 edition of the Oppenheimer Michaelmas Cricket Week , Glenwood took on KES at the Pietermaritzburg University Oval. Play was delayed for 2 and a quarter hours due to a very wet outfield and damp bowling creases. Glenwood lost the toss and were asked to bat by KES. Some poor shot selection and woeful calling between the wickets resulted in Glenwood being bundled out for a meagre 111 , which included 4 run-outs. Only Ritesh Ramlugan provided any sort of resistance scoring 27. That poor display set the tone for the day with Glenwood turning in a sub-standard performance with the ball. KES found it easy going in knocking off the required runs without losing a wicket. A very disappointing performance from the boys in green.
Day 2 saw Glenwood pitted against St. Davids from Johannesburg at Pietermaritzburg Oval 1. Once again Glenwood lost the toss and were put into bat and once again the boys’ failure to knuckle down and apply themselves resulted in the loss of wickets to poor shots. A rearguard action from the boys in the lower order saw Glenwood reach a barely respectable 145 all out. Callan Pearce showed the upper order what some hard work could accomplish with a good 33 not out. A good chat at lunch regarding bowling disciplines and commitment in the field obviously struck a chord because the boys came out after lunch and played with purpose , passion and brains. The much fancied St. Davids batting line-up had no answer to the pace and discipline of the Glenwood bowling attack and were bowled out for 119. Callan Pearce returning figures of 3 for 29 , to cap a good day personally and Matthew Kirkham bagging 3 for 34. A win for Glenwood by 26 runs and many lessons learnt.
Day 3 was a scorcher at the Collegians Club and Glenwood won the toss and asked Grey College to bat first. A reasonable bowling performance wasn’t really backed up in the field and Grey posted an imposing 237 to win in 50 over’s. Another lunch time chat by the coach was well-adhered to because Glenwood batted superbly well against a very good Grey bowling unit. Great commitment and heart was shown as Glenwood fell short by 23 runs on the day. All the batsmen showed guts and purpose with the stand-out being Wesley McLean with a hard-fought 56. A lot of heart was taken by the performance and Glenwood left the ground having learnt some valuable lessons once again.
Day 4 was another scorcher and Glenwood travelled to Eston Country Club to take on Hudson Park from East London. Glenwood won the toss and inserted Hudson Park on a good looking batting wicket. Good bowling and fielding disciplines were adhered to and Hudson Park were restricted to 161 for 8 off their allotted 45 over’s . Once again Callan Pearce showed his class with 4 for 31 and the captain , Richard Wissing, bowling 9 overs for only 13 runs and picking up a wicket. Once again the advice at lunch was followed and Glenwood batted sensibly and clinically and knocked off the runs for the loss of only 4 wickets . Wesley McLean and Tyron Konigkrammer being the standout batters with 37 and 38 not out respectively. A good 6 wicket win was well deserved as the boys had adopted a much more committed and mature approach to their cricket.
@All Black: Guise-Brown even ball 100 there.
Got a solid klap from PBHS yesterday though, at one stage 35/7 or something before getting to 100. PBHS have some serious strike bowlers apparently, or was it a snake pit. See lots of low scores so possibly a nice hot, humid day. I was in Karkloof and it was shisa up there.
M.College 227 for 7 after 50 against NO 1 Affies. College have some injured bowlers so will see what happens.
Michaelmas results (day 1): http://www.schoolsportsnews.co.za/cricket/michaelmas-results-day-1/
@Sir Pius, yep well done to KES. Glenwood lost about 5 wickets in 2 overs, no chance in coming back from that. They did well to get 111 from being around 50/5. Not sure what happened as was not there but either KES played extremely well or Glenwood were just not there. The Glenwood side narrowly lost to their Old Boys with 4x Dolphins players and 2 boys are KZN standard. This side beat College and Northwood in term 1, the result does not reflect their ability. I hope they come back today and put in a performance. Roger, well done to your side…
KES beat Glenwood by 10 wickets at Michaelmas yesterday.
