Boishaai to place their perfect season on the line at Riversdale

Not since Grey College in 2010 has the undisputable top ranked school in SA been able to win every single match they played during the season*.

Paarl Boys’High is unbeaten so far this year and already holds a virtually unassailable lead at the top of the national rankings with just a few weeks of the 2015 season left.

Their record to date stands at played 17, won 17. These wins include their much sort after and elusive Paarl Interskole prize, a Winelands triple-crown which is no mean feat, a Western Province Premier League clean-sweep, which should be made complete in every sense of the term when Boishaai plays weaker than usual Drostdy the weekend after next in Die Burger semi-final; and a few other huge national scalps in the form of EG Jansen, Garsfontein, Monument and the biggest one of the lot: Grey College who they beat in Bloemfontein to make it that much more special.

So the Boishaai 1st XV of 2015 stands a realistic chance of completing their season with a 100% win ratio and being remembered as the best schoolboy rugby team since 2010. They really only have one last major obstacle left in their path – Oakdale!

Success often comes at a price. For Boishaai that price is five SA Schools players as well as their top rated head coach being unavailable this weekend’s Oakdale match because of SA Schools under-18 international duty.

Following a Rugby Advisory Committee decision, Boishaai requested a postponement of the Oakdale fixture from Saturday, 15 August to Saturday, 22 August, a date on which both schools were initially free.

When this appeal was denied by Oakdale, still in accordance with Advisory Committee decision-making, Boishaai asked if they could send all their teams excluding their 1st XV to Riversdale this weekend and play the 1st XV game on Tuesday, 19 August once all their SA Schools players and coach were back. Once again Oakdale turned them down.

Under those circumstances the Boishaai protocol called for the Governing Body to be consulted, in order to agree to their next course of action. However the school management took it upon themselves to commit to the Oakdale fixture on 15 August without any further consultation.

So now Boishaai minus their five plus one, has to travel to Oakdale’s home ground, which is a hard enough venue for a full-strength powerhouse rugby school to win at in any given year. Here they will have to overcome a formidable National Top 10 placed Bulls team in order to keep their dream of the perfect season alive.

A further consequence is that Boishaai will now play Drostdy in Die Burger semi-final on 22 August.

Oakdale’s decisions are not without merit.

After Premier Interschools approached Oakdale, they agreed to move their televised game against Boland Landbou from 22 August to 29 August. The reason for the rescheduled game was so that PI could avoid a clash and accommodate both this match and the Paul Roos versus Grey College game which will go ahead on 22 August as planned.

It was this rescheduling which resulted in two things.

Firstly it caused Oakdale to drop out of Die Burger competition as the final was already set for 29 August at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, the same date on which the Bulls will play Boland Landbou. Had things not changed, the formbook suggested that Die Burger for Large Schools would have been a Boishaai – Oakdale final, meaning their inter-schools game a couple of weeks prior to that final would have been pointless.

Secondly by moving their Boland Landbou game to 29 August, Oakdale would have been free to play Boishaai on 22 August. However they refused to accommodate Boishaai on that date because they had already made plans to use the Boishaai game on 15 August as the main attraction part of a Reunion Weekend complete with fund-raising intentions.

A blogger made a worthy comment by stating: “well, Boishaai always honours their commitments, unlike some other well-known schools who cancel matches for lesser reasons.”

One last thought revolves around the SA Schools Committee’s under-18 internationals planning, which surely after all these years of arranging the same format involving the same teams playing at the same venues, is in a position to let schools know a year in advance, when and for how long they plan to pull SA Schools players out of inter-schools rugby. This will go a long way to avoiding predicaments such as this one above. Paul Roos’ win against Grey College in 2009 will stand in the record books forever. There is no column noting the missing SA Schools players on that big occasion.

*In 2013 Affies won all their games but had to share the accolades with Paarl Gymnasium, who some ranking systems including the BHP used on this website, ranked above Affies on final list for that season.

Een aand was Jannie (ons noem hom maar so) tussen so ‘n groep manne.

Helderberg het in my wete nooit down downers gehad nie.

@BoishaaiPa: Also…if we do a breakdown of the top opposition played, i.e. Cat 4, 4.5 and 5 schools, Affies played 12 of their 14 games (86%) against these top category schools, while Gim played 19 of their 21 games (90%) against them. Gim did not loose a game either that season and played 7 games more than Affies…You tell me who deserved the No 1 spot?

@Cappie: That article was a little pre-empted at the time and Gim still had to play a couple of games while Affies completed their season. The 10% winratio bonus is calculated weekly on every match and only had some influence on the final standings as it forms part of your total points throughout the season. If you keep up a 80% winratio you get 10% of total games played…Thus teams who play more games will be slightly advantaged because they have won more and kept their 80% winratio…if you played 20 games you will receive a 2 point bonus, if you played 15 games, you only receive 1.5 bonus etc etc. That is only one of the reasons that Gim creeped ahead of Affies. Gim played 21 games that season winning 20 and drawing only 1 while Affies only played 14 games..7 less than Gim!. Gim also played slightly more difficult opposition than Affies did. If you want I will give you the whole breakdown per game and points earned. Michaelhouse cannot earn more points than they already have, they will stay stable as is. They can move up or down depending on what the other teams around them do because it depends what your final average is.

@beet: Yes, I remembered a week or two before BoishaaiPa’s final rankings an article was placed that Affies will end up nr 1 for 2013, however with the final rankings it became evedent that a team that wins 80% of his games will obtain an additional 10% bonus points for the matches that they won.

This final twist in the tail will definately support inter alia Michaelhouse to end up much higher than every one might have thought. Other schools that will end up with an 80% or more win shall be Boishaai and Affies (12 out of 15). Paul Roos may also end up there pending their last number of games. Even if Paarl Gim wins all their remaining games they can only ends with 15 out of 19, which place them just below 80% wins.

We’ll follow the blog for the final rankings!

I think the biggest issue here is that there is two much of this SA Schools rugby games going on schoolboy rugby is just that and more and more genuine schoolboy rugby is being taken over by Craven week and SA Schools.

And be honest who really cares about the two SA schools teams playing at the moment I am sure that is not what Booishaai are worried about.

It’s like Craven Week officials telling schools they cannot play there players 3 weeks before Craven Week what utter rubbish, one of these days schools will not be able to play any of there good players.

The face of schoolboy rugby is changing into something I don’t like and I would much rather watch some interschool,s match like Gym vs Booishaai or Dale vs Queens than some Craven week or SA Schools team.

Simple as this the tail is now wagging the dog.

I feel sorry for Booishaai here.

One other point : Oakdale is a big game and the Boishaai team enjoy playing there . We are friends with the Oakdale family ! They are great people ! We therefore wanted to go there as a full team (I suppose this I cannot talk for the school since I am not close to the team). Yes the replacements will represent the school with pride but the whole team could have been given the chance to play if Oakdale was willing to compromise. And only the 19 A’s could have moved to another day so the Oakdale reunions could have continued. I personally am disappointed that traditional friends did not want to help out . More importantly the coach Sean must be terribly disappointed that he could not be there with his team . But nothing will change this now so the show will go on . Enjoy what is rightly only a game played by children .

    Good luck!

Anyone ever considered the possibility that this may be in Boishaai’s favour?….who is to say that Oakdale wouldn’t have won against a full strenght HJS team, but might lose against the ‘weakened’ team?

Rugby is a team sport, funny things can happen…..sometimes your best player can be your biggest liability…..or a red card against a SA schools player can dramatically alter outcomes…..we will never know, but above mentioned scenario is not above the realms of probability.

For those that thinks this is preposterous…..may I present a good case in point ……Argentina has never beaten South Africa in 19 previous tests with their best players….they send a second string side (with 11 changes from what they consider their best side)….the weakened Argies scores a historical victory.

Many factors influence the outcome of a game…Anyway, it is not as if it’s a unique situation, many teams had lost due to such factors….Grey bloem/ Paul Roos 2009 most famous example…..the world will not end….it is not a matter of life and death, it is just a game.

Gaan jy Saterdag daar wees? Ek sal graag wil kennis maak

@akw: And they moved the semi’s of the Beeld to accommodate the schools and the players….why would they do that if it was no different to injuries?

@akw: Have you lost your coach as well due to injury?..and 5 of your best players at the same time. It is not exactly the same as injuries, Injuries tend to target random players..not always the best 5!..But we have moved on and Boishaai will play with what they have to fulfill that commitment.

Sooo, why are we having this debate?

When schools lose players to injury it cannot be used as an excuse, why should this situation be different?

@tandemfitarborsurculus: I cannot imagine that a coach like Sean Erasmus (SA Schools Coach) would like to let his team play in his absence neither can I believe that he would like to take the chance to compromise his unbeaten record or even his nr 1 position. From a kind of “professional” point of view, this is a very funny situation?

@Kattes-Strofes: Good Luck to the players of Boishaai. Young player will always take on the challenge, however it does not sound to be a very clever or strategic decision.

To further complicate matters, Boishaai, will be travelling to Riversdale without their coach, who were called up for higher duties.

It was and still is a good debate but the game is on and the boys will arise to the occation.

    See you there.

@Kattes-Strofes: Firstly, it is a remarkable record, recorded by Boishaai so far. I hope they go unbeaten as they deserve it. They were definitely very spectacular in 2015.

@wimster: Secondly I can add that Affies also played Glenwood without their 6 SA schools players that specific year, two of whom were involved in the Bulls match against the Cheetahs on Saturday. Ivan van Zyl and RG Snyman.

This is actually not true. In 2013 Affies went unbeaten the entire season by winning all of their matches.

Although many ranked Paarl Gym as the no.1 school that year, many also ranked Affies as the no.1 school.

    Their results were as follows:

    bt. Diamantveld 32-7
    bt. Queens College 27-13
    bt. Grey High 31-3
    bt. Dale College 51-0
    bt. HTS John Vorster 88-9
    bt. KES 46-6
    bt. Jeppe Boys’ High 36-18
    bt. Hoërskool Framesby 41-21
    bt. Paul Roos Gymnasium 17-10
    bt. Grey College 37-31
    bt. Hoërskool Waterkloof 19-18
    bt. Maritzburg College 51-20
    bt. Glenwood High School 53-23
    bt. Pretoria Boys’ High 50-12

Heard that the remaining 1st. team members of Boishaai were also consulted. Although some concerns were raised, the players decided to play,in order to keep Boishaai’s reputation in tact, that they always fullfill their commitments.
It is still a daunting task,so soon after the hype of Interschools. Although the 2nd. team players are more than usefull, and[ with no disrespect towards other schools] would probably make most other 1st teams, to lose the heart of Boishaai’s formidable tight five[both locks] and the x- factor of Khanya Nkusane [no.8], Manual Rass[ centre] and Taariq February[ wing], is almost impossible to replace.

However, I am confident that the chosen team will give their best, and that is all our supporters can ask for.
