There was a cup final feel about the Paarl Interskole match which lived up to its hype of being a well-attended and closely contested affair. Paarl Boys High beat Paarl Gymnasium 16 – 10 after a nail-biting closing few minutes.
Match highlights
2min. A try is awarded to HJS no.8 Khanya Ncusane, who shows great soccer skills to control the ball after Jean-Louis le Grange charges down a George Lourens attempted clearance kick made out in midfield and without much by way of defensive support behind him. Jean luc Cilliers adds the extras for a 7-0 lead.
6min. After a short aerial ping-pong exchange, a good chase by HJS lock Ruben de Villiers is the main contributor to his team having the territorial advantage in the end. From here HJS earns a penalty after Gim’s Gustav Marais comes through the ruck and takes a player out without the ball. JL Cilliers, who deservedly would go on to claim the player of the match award, lands the difficult penalty. 10-0 to HJS.
9min. Soon after the kickoff Theo Boshoff slots a long range penalty for Gim after HJS errs at a ruck. 10-3.
12min. In spite of having two of the best locks in SA in their team, HJS genrally struggle at lineout time. After a messy own throw lineout, the Galpille managed to tidy up and a Gim forward is pinged for no daylight while trying to steal the ball at the ruck. Cilliers misses the kick.
20min. Arguably the best attack of the first half is initiated by a good hands over the tackle offload by Boishaaier Salmaan Moerat. HJS advances to near the Gim line before a misdirected pass into touch halts their progress. HJS easily look the better team by this stage of the match.
24min. Gim make use of the boot to advance into HJS territory. Here an HJS lineout goes astray and Gim’s MJ Hays sparks a ball in hand attack that almost seems the Bloedworse score a try. Two quick succession red zone penalties are used to continue the ground attack instead of the kick at goal. However Gim can’t make inroads against a resolute HJS D-line. When Gim wins a third penalty, this time for offside, they decide to take the angled kick at goal but it’s missed by Boshoff. It’s viewed as criminal by some because moments earlier Gim turned down what would have been a relatively simple kick. They were not able to turn possession into points during this passage and it was key to the outcome in the end.
30 min. A beautiful line break by Gim’s Wian van Zyl gets them into their opponents 22 but the flyhalf loses the ball in contact to end this bit of excitement.
33min. HJS wing Tyreeq February carelessly crashes into an airborne van Zyl, in what looks like a yellow card offence for reckless play. The referee points out that the HJS wing had his eyes on the ball all the time and ends up having harsher words with the irate Gim player than the transgessor who’s only sanction is a penalty.
35 min. Gim wins a penalty and choose to end the half with a long shot at poles which Boshoff is also unsuccessful with.
Halftime. Paarl Boys High 10-3 Paarl Gim.
36 min. It becomes noticeable that the field has a sandpit on it which the players do well to negotiate.
38 min. The game is characterised by kicking partly due to the defences of the respective sides being so well organised. A very good kick into the box by van Zyl is coolly gathered after the bounce by Cilliers who makes a good exit under huge pressure.
44 min. HJS’s Bradley Thain sets off on an uninspiring diagonal run and when gets taken out, his harried pass is intercepted by George Lourens who finds Boshoff wide on the left. Boshoff looks to well covered by February but a good hand off easily gets rid of the last line defender and Boshoff races in to score the try and converts to level matters at 10-10.
47 min. A turnover and kick ahead by Gim places HJS under the kosh. Cilliers again comes to the rescue but this time his clearance fails to find the safety of touch. Van Zyl again uses his line speed to work a gap and his long pass sees left wing Keenan Abrahams able to get in front of his tackler and use his outside arm to fling a wildish pass to a support runner racing up on an inside line. The pass does not go to hand and is knocked on. What is clear is that the momentum in the match has swung in Gim’s favour since the second half began.
54 min. Ncusane does good work in midfield to generate go forward. In the act of making the tackle Gim’s Lourens seems to won the ball legitimately but while on the ground and part of the ruck that had formed, he continues to play the ball by attempting to throw it back to a teammate in the backline. Penalty to HJS! Cilliers makes no mistake. 13-10 to Boishaai.
61 min. HJS seems to have found their second wind. They effect a turnover in midfield and their lively no.21 kick the ball into an unguarded space in the 22 where Gim get trapped in possession and again turnover ball. From there HJS show urgency at first to get very close to the tryline but the ball becomes soon becomes very static and after an HJS scrum, it’s Gim that do ever so well to trap an HJS player on the ground for holding to win a relieving penalty.
66 min. HJS is still enjoying territorial advantage during this late stage of the match. They manage to win a penalty at the breakdown on the left near the Gim 22. Replacement Jandré Grobler slots the fairly difficult kick to extend their lead to 16-10 lead.
69 min. Gim wins a penalty soon after the kickoff and Boshoff sets up after lineout inside the opposition 22m area. Gim then comes up with a very good sustained attack involving the best continuity of the match. Although HJS make two penalisable errors, they remain focused after the tap and go and continue to repel their determined rivals in a series of attacks near the line. The tense finish sees replacement Gim centre Taigh Schoor backing himself to punch a hole on the left outside. When he goes to ground, he quickly gets to his feet to have a second go but the ref adjudged him to have been brought down in the tackle, meaning he had to release the ball and get to his feet before playing it again. What an exciting finish to a game that has a history of having a spread of 5-points.
70 min. Boishaai old boys and supporters are so overcome by joy with the referees decision to award their team the penalty, that they don’t even wait for the game to end. They break the barriers and rush onto the field to congratulate their players. The ref is forced to blow the final whistle.
FINAL SCORE : PAARL BOYS HIGH 16 PAARL GYNASIUM 10.
From Premier Interschools: It’s that time of the year again. Late July and the quiet Boland town of Paarl will start to buzz with the excitement only the imminent arrival of Interschools can provide. Paarl Gimnasium versus Paarl Boys’ High School is simply the biggest Interschools in the world! Since 1915 (when Interschools was “born”) these two rugby giants have competed against each other.
The 2015 season:
Paarl Boys’ High head coach Sean Erasmus and assistant Elmo Wolfaardt are quietly confident that their 2015 crop is a special bunch. At the Easter festivals, they dispatched Noordvaal giants Monnas and Garsfontein in an efficient and effective manner within two days of each other. Experienced lock Ruben de Villiers, a veteran of the 2014 campaign, plays a vital role in keeping the solid tight five together. With fellow lock, Salmaan Moerat, they make a formidable pair at 2.00 m.
When they also dispatched early season favorites EG Jansen at Wildeklawer and then won against Grey College a week later in Bloemfontein, everyone sat up and started taking notice of the Boys in Blue. They romped to the No. 1 spot in SA and after 16 matches are still unbeaten. With such a competitive season having already played some of the best schools in the country and their local Western Cape league, the boys from the Southern Paarl can already claim to have a very successful season. Everyone knows however, that their season’s success is mostly defined by the one big game in August!
Paarl Boys’ High had seven WP representatives at Craven Week this year. Tyreeq February, Manuel Rass, Khanya Ncusane, Ruben de Villiers, Salmaan Moerat, Leo Kruger and Wikus Groenewald were all at the Markötter fields in July in the famous white and blue hooped jerseys. Scrumhalf Bradley Thain and reserve flanker Charl Serdyn were both picked for the WP Academy team.
Interschools Line-up
15 Jeanluc Cilliers, 14 Tyreeq February, 13 Manuel Rass, 12 Jan-Louis la Grange, 11 Urgene Johannes, 10 Rayhaan Lombaard, 9 Bradley Thain, 8 Khanya Ncusane, 7 JC van Schalkwyk, 6 Andreas van Wyk (c), 5 Salmaan Moerat, 4 Ruben de Villiers, 3 Leo Kruger, 2 MC de Jongh, 1 Wikus Groenewald.
Paarl Gimnasium has also quietly gone about their winning way. They did an early demolition job of Pietersburg at the Paul Roos 150th festival day. They then wrapped up wins against Menlopark and Garsfontein in the North-South tournament before surprisingly going down to Bishops. They then delivered a mixed bag at the Wildeklawer tournament where they had a good win against HTS Middelburg and then drew with Affies on the last day. Their win against Paul Roos at Markotter came somewhat as a surprise as the maroon machine was early front runners for the top spot in the country. That win showed that the team from Northern Paarl is like most other Gim teams of previous years, very well coached and very dangerous!
Four players from Paarl Gimnasium represented WP at the Craven Week in 2015. Lock and captain Ernst Van Rhyn was also appointed as the WP captain, hooker Johan Grobbelaar, flanker Johan Visser and flyhalf George Lourens. Prop O’Neil Thiart, centre Taigh Schoor and fullback Wian van Zyl all represented WP at the Academy Week in 2015.
Possible Interschools Team:
15 Naudé Wessels, 14 Max Thalwitzer, 13 Taigh Schoor, 12 George Lourens, 11 Keenan Abrahams, 10 Wian van Zyl, 9 Zak Burger, 8 Muller Uys, 7 Gustav Marais, 6 Johan Visser, 5 Ernst van Rhyn (c), 4 MJ Hayes, 3 O’Neil Thiart, 2 Johan Grobbelaar, 1 Rohan Hamman.
Interskole is verby..Dis Dinsdag.
@Speartackle: Jip Spiesie! Jy is reg.
Daai laaste tackle was hoog. Gim is beroof !!!!
Oud afrigter het altyd vir my gesê……………”In victory, always act as if you are used to winning”
@PaarlBok: Ek voel jou pyn. Dit sal beter raak. Belowe.
Hul verdien defnitief krediet.
Gee maar vir Boishaai bietjie krediet, die A span tellings van interskole was 119-34 in Boishaai se guns, hulle verdien krediet.
Kattes en BHP
glo my, dit help nie julle probeer verduidelik nie. Horende doof en siende blind. …
So wat die ander doen, skeel my min. Behalwe nou natuurlik as mens iets by hulle kan leer.
@QC86: I just might with a few individuals!..
@BoishaaiPa: with a win like that, you can easily push it until Wednesday.
@QC86: Yeah..I’ll just sit back and enjoy this one ....It’s Monday now and bragging rights are over!
@AffieOuer: Te veelk nektarsappies sedert Saterdag al klaar gehad..Dis hoekom Maandag so ekstra moeilik is!
@BoishaaiPa: enjoy the win, sometimes certain wins are sweeter than others due to comments passed here.
Lees Die Burger – bladsy 3.
@BuffelsCM: Nee ek weet dit was defnitief nie jy nie..dit was so paar ander manne wat nie eers by Gim betrokke was nie…
Sien julle oor 2 weke in Riversdal.
@Stier: No rumour, he is already helping out at Maties, don’t know if it is a permanent arrangement and if he will still be available to coach Gim though.
Well done to Boishaai. It wasn’t the best game of the year by any of the two teams but the atmosphere was awesome. Thanks to both schools for putting up such a awesome day.
Don’t change a thing, you don’t fix something if it isn’t broke.
I think Glenwood must cry watching Boishaai playing like champions with Shaun running things. All their teams are looking good. Danger signs for the other schools.
I heard a roumor that the Gimmies head coach is off to Maties. Does anybody know if this is indeed correct? Maybe they can get Ludeke?
ABF…absolutely bloody final thing. Faurestraat lyk elke jaar gehawend.
Swak skeidsregters ten spyt.
@BOG: GC se oud-hoof was die eregas by Boishaai se Groot Brag vir old boys.
@BoishaaiPa: Het jy vanuit Australie kommentaar gelewer of gedrink? Of beide?
Well done to Boishaai
Huge blow for Gim to have their talisman Vissie out injured, especially with the kind of form he was in, as everyone saw at CW.
Gim still had enough opportunities to take the win, but it wasnt meant to be.
Agree with one of the other bloggers that the ref was too scared to make a big decision (YC) on the day.
Seriously?..All you can comment on was that the game wasn’t over?…It was actually 72min 40 odd seconds…that final penalty meant the game was in all but a whistle over…Done and dusted.
Jip oakdale is klas.
Jislaaik, that was tough….well done Boishaai..
Looks at the scoreboard (. Boy Louw. Ook n Boishaaier)
Vat jou pak soos n man.
Looks at the scoreboard sal gesê word…
come on guys, grow up.
@tzavosky: The ref definitely blew the final whistle But his options were pretty limited by then
@Losbal: Well said Losbal. I imagine that for people who are part of this occasion and sense the emotion it, this was another classic.
Boishaai OB’s ran onto the field to carry the ref on their shoulders but he ran away…,
@beet: Did the final whistle blow, or was the game stopped due to a pitch invasion?
Klassieke Interskole met baie druk, foute, spanning, ens
Thanks Gimmies. Dit is n great instelling teen great teenstanders.
Well done Boishaai! The finish was very tense and exciting
@phat55: Commentator said Vissie had to pull out late in the week due to a hamstring injury.
Is Vissie playing or not??
@Speartackle: stem.
Ek dink beurtkrag gaan selfde bevolkingsontploffing meebring…lol
‘n Goeie voorbeeld in latere jare is Vyfster se ou skool. Voor in die koor was Ben Vorster, wie se nasate nou gesiene boere hier is.
It is time!! Let’s go. Rom, Rom, ROM! Die Blou Trein Kom!! Vat hom flaffie!
@everybody…… Ridendum dicere quid vetat…….Castigat ridendo mores……Homo sum humani a me nihil alienum puto!
Take that SACS, you’re but a puppy compared to them…lol
Dis natuurlik Ben Vorster teen Secunda…lol….ook miskien goed so.
Rugby 365

@BoishaaiPa: Laasgenoemde
@Oakdale supporter: Skat jy moet seker daar in Montagu of Bonnievale omgewing bly…
Volgende jaar is net so n goeie groep van KleinGim. My c worth.
@Vyfster: A Brief History of education in the Western Cape up to 1900. The first schools actually opened in 1658. The schools as we know it today was only established during the early 1800’s.
1658
17 April, The first formal school in South Africa is opened by the Dutch East India Company. It is specifically intended for the slaves from The Amersfoort. Pieter van der Stael teaches the class.
1663
A second school opens for children of the colonists. The class comprises 12 white colonist children, 4 young slaves and 1 Khoikhoi child. A church clerk named Ernestus Back teaches them.
1682
A colonial decree requires compulsory school attendance from all slave children under 12 years of age. Older slave children have to attend school twice a week. Both settlers and slaves ignore this and some slaves even hide in mountain caves on one occasion to avoid going to school.
1685
A separate school starts, exclusively for slave children under 12. The boys’ teacher is Jan Pasqual and a freed slave, Margaret, teaches the girls. Some slaves are selected to learn skilled trades. The 1663 school continues but is reserved for non-slave children and offspring of colonists.
1714
In the Cape Colony, Governor de Chavonnes decrees the first educational ordinance: the Ordonnantie van de School Ordenning. The decree makes it illegal for a person to be employed as a teacher without the approval of the governor and the Council of Policy. Importantly the Scholarchs (Committee to oversee education) is established. 3 church ministers and 1 civil servant make up the committee and control education in the Colony. The duties of teachers are spelled out and regulations regarding school organization are laid down. These measures represent the first steps towards formalising education in the Cape.
1786
The Cape Government opens a military school.
1792
Jacob Ziegler’s private French and Dutch School opens.
1795
Napoleon invades the Netherlands and the Batavian Republic is established. The Dutch school system reforms because of new teaching materials and textbooks, the first school buildings are designed and education becomes a function of the state. This will later have an effect on education at the Cape.
1798
Joseph Lancaster starts his method of education (monitorial system) for working class children in England. This system will later be used in South Africa.
1799
The first school specifically for Africans opens near what is now King William’s Town. Previous to this only a handful of Khoi and black South Africans received formal education.
1800
Christian missionaries establish schools for Africans, mainly on the fringes of settler occupation.
1803
The Dutch re-occupy the Cape after the first British occupation.
1804
The School Ordinance is passed. This is a milestone in the history of education because it withdrew the control of public education from the church and introduced the idea that the organisation of public schooling is a responsibility of the state.
1806
The British forcibly occupy the Cape. This interrupts educational reforms put in place by the School Ordinance.
1815
The British take over the Cape colony from the Dutch.
1822 – 1824
Government Free Schools (also known as English Free Schools) are established throughout the Cape Colony. A school is established at Wynberg and is the forerunner of the Wynberg Boys’ Schools. Based on Lancaster’s monitorial system, the schools are mostly aimed at the poor. Instruction is exclusively in English and at no charge to the parents. Free schools are originally intended to be multiracial, but soon they begin to provide for white children only. Church Schools become almost exclusivley coloured to complement the Free Schools.
1823
The first school in the Orange Free State opens.
1824
The famous mission station, Lovedale, is founded by the Glasgow Missionary Society near present-day Alice in the Eastern Cape.
1828
Ordinance 50 gives equal rights to the Khoi and other ‘free persons of colour’, allowing movement to seek work.
1829
The Zuid-Afrikaansche Athenaeum (South African College) is established. The College later gives rise to two major educational institutions: the SA College Schools (SACS) and the University of Cape Town.
1833
All slaves in the British Empire are freed. Slaves in South Africa are also freed, with Ordinance 50 being extended to them. White farmers can no longer rely on a supply of unfree labour.
1834
The Government Free School system had mostly failed because of Dutch parents’ boycott of it. In the Eastern Cape it was better received, due to the larger numbers of British settlers. After this year it was gradually abandoned. The only successful Free Schools were the one at Uitenhage and Graaff-Reinet because teachers did not abandon the Dutch language and also learnt to identify with their communities better.
1835
Natal opens its first school.
1836
The Great Trek begins.
1838
First Teachers’ Training College established at Genadendal mission station
1839 (1822-1839)
The number and quality of Dutch private schools increases by more than double to protest against the English school system, which is considered to be inferior by the colonists. The Cape’s strong tradition of private schools can be traced back to this time.
1839 (1822-1839)
The number and quality of Dutch private schools increases by more than double to protest against the English school system, which is considered to be inferior by the colonists. The Cape’s strong tradition of private schools can be traced back to this time.
1839
A Department of Education is established in the Cape Colony. All mission schools now fall under its control. The Education Law is also passed in the Cape Colony and, amongst other things, the state grants aid to schools, limits religious instruction and gives attention to classical languages such as Greek and Latin.
1841
State financial grants to mission schools begin.
1842
The first school is established in what later becomes the Transvaal.
1843
Various administrators in the Department of Education open their first office in the old Slave Lodge and this is the first official location of the Western Cape Education Department. The furniture consists of 1 communal desk which the Superintendent-General of Education and his clerk share, 3 chairs and 1 cupboard with shelves!
1853
Adams Mission College in Natal is inaugurated. Many African leaders are educated there including Chief Albert Luthuli.
1854
Sir George Grey is appointed as Governor of the Cape. He subsidizes mission schools as part of his ‘border pacification’ policy.
1855
A total number of 145 black students attend school in Natal, almost all these schools are run by church missions .
1856
The state officially opposes providing free education. Financial support has to come from other sources, such as the Latin Fund, the Masonic Education Fund, the Slave Compensation Fund, the Bible and School Commission, the levying of school fees, and overseas sources.
1858
Education Act No. 14 is passed. It provides for the creation of Educational Boards in villages and towns. This means that more schools can be established, but the funding of these remains a problem (see above).
1858 – 1859
The pupil-teacher system (advanced pupils teaching junior classes) is formalised and, for the first time, girls are allowed to teach. Pupils have to be 13 years of age and have to be trained for 5 years and write an annual examination. After completion of the training, one year must to be spent at a recognized training institute.
1859 (1848-1859)
Higher education is offered by the South African College, the Diocesan College in Rondebosch, the Theological Seminary at Stellenbosch, St Andrew’s in Grahamstown, and the Grey Institute in Port Elizabeth.
1864
Evening Schools are officially recognized by the government, and received state aid. These schools are designed for young adults who are working during the day and could not attend ordinary schools.
1865
Education Act No. 13 is passed. The Act formalizes the system of state subsidies for private schools. State funding is divided into three school categories: public, mission and ‘native’. A mere 2 827 African students are enrolled in schools.
1869
Inanda Seminary for girls is established.
1872
The Cape becomes a self-governing colony.
1873
The first district boarding schools are established to accommodate children who lived too far from the nearest public school. The first of these was Blaauwvallei near Wellington.
A scheme of fixed standards of attainment up to Std 4 is drawn up to ensure that pupils would learn more than just meaningless facts. Many schools, especially Mission Schools, need to change to comply with the standard.
The University of the Cape of Good Hope is established to replace the Board of Examiners. It determines standards and syllabuses, conducts the School Elementary Examination, the School Higher Examination and the Matriculation Examination, and confers degrees.
1874
New legislation comes into being and colleges officially receive aid from the government. This benefits the South African College, the Diocesan College, the Grey Institute (Port Elizabeth), Gill College (Somerset East) and St Andrew’s College (Grahamstown). These institutions can now afford to expand and further the cause of higher education.
The South African Teachers’ Association is established and Langham Dale is chairman.
1875
Die Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners is established in Paarl to promote Afrikaans as a people’s language independent from Dutch.
1877
The Council of Education is established.
A number of wars of dispossession fought on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony end. More mission stations and mission schools open because of the ceasefire.
1882
Marianhill Mission station and catholic school opens.
Proclamation No. 113 of 1882 promises grants for the erection of school buildings and the state will contribute on a pound-for-pound basis. Furniture, books and stationery will also be supplied on a pound-for-pound basis. However, the depression reduces the amount of government money available for buildings. Teachers and parents voice their outrage because the Education Department has again failed to deliver on its promises.
1884
A ‘payment-by-results’ system is established in the Cape and teachers receive extra money according to the number of children that pass.
Black schooling becomes a separate responsibility within the Council of Education.
1885
Enrolment of African school students rises to 15 568.
1887
Std 6 is declared the end of the primary school course. Those who pass, receive a Public Schools Certificate. The School Elementary Certificate is written after Std 7.
1891
Enrolment of African school students rises to 25 000.
Cecil John Rhodes proposes a university system that would bring English and Afrikaans speaking communities together in South Africa.
1894
The Council of Education is abolished and a sub-department of ‘Native Education’ is established under the Superindendent of Education.
yeah, fair enough….I am not judging and totally concur with any parental right to choose what they perceive to be the best for their children….T am just interested in such phenomena……having said that, the weight of history and tradition gives a massive advantage to those schools and creates a positive feedback loop…..the stronger and more famous they get the bigger demand for places occurs which makes them even stronger etc etc, logically if there are massive waiting lists you can pick and choose and would obviously rather admit the primary schools craven week player or the academic achiever alongside the old boys progeny (which i assume carries a fair weight), than the juvenile delinquent who tried to run away from home and is already a drug dealer at age 13 to name an extreme example …….classic case of the rich get richer……..Good for them i suppose, and it also partially explains the statistical anomaly of certain schools dominating certain areas.
All very logical and understandable, so I wasn’t really looking for a defensive and explanatory answer, or a debate…..since I already knew all the points Tandem so eloquently expressed…….I was simply looking for exact figures of the current 1st teams, to satisfy my statistically minded brain, configure probability ratio’s, work out if there is something different in Paarl’s water……. call it idle intellectual curiosity, no malice intended
Now that you’ve mentioned it, maybe someone can explain to me why the Cape schools mentioned are so young….a mere 150 years old, while Cape Town and Stellenbosch are about 350 years old……i mean i grew up in Tzaneen, in the far northern parts of the country…..the Town is just over 100 years old yet the primary school (laerskool Tzaneen) i attended is also over 100 years old……My old High School, Ben Vorster is only 50 years old, but the other high school in Tzaneen (Merensky) is also over a 100 years old. Seems schools was not that high on the agenda the first 200 years in the Cape …lol…..people might find it interesting to compare how shortly after colonization Harvard university was established in America…..
anyway, good luck to all teams playing saturday….I think a few other games will also be crackers, especially Grey Bloem/Grey PE, Bishops/Paul Roos and i think Stellenberg/SACS might turn out to be a gem
@Tandem: Amen….in 2011 the 1stXV had 6 Old boys sons playing in it..@Ploegskaar: JL Cilliers might come from Kenridge but his dad was the Boishaai 1st XI cricket captain in 1981….His older brother was also in Boishaai. Not all old boys live in Paarl!
@Vyfster: Boishaai , Gim and Paul Roos all nearly 150 years old or already 150 years old . From the beginning ( 150 years ) people have been sending their children to these schools . All 3 schools have ” koshuis ” accommodation all with similar heritage. In the case of Boishaai the majority of ” koshuis ” scholars are children of old boys . They send their children to the school to become Boishaaiers and to experience the same education as that they received. Sport is an important part but not more important than academics or teaching of good behaviour. It is therefore not relevant to debate about the primary schools they went to . Other schools like Grey Bloem , Grey PE , Sacs , Bishops , Rondebosch and the great tradition schools in KZN will say the same thing . These schools all have massive waiting lists . A very small percentage of kids on these waiting lists are apply to come and play rugby . Their parents have applied for a place on a waiting lists years before they even knew their kids are going to excel in something specific. This is not meant as disrespectful against other schools and not meant to suggest there is something inferior about them but more to suggest that we need to stop trying to judge others for their decisions based on our own opinions and let people use their free choice to determine what is best for their children according to their own judgement and logic .
@Vyfster: En Jeanluc Cilliers was in Kenridge PS
@Vyfster: Leo Kruger was in LS Brackenfell, saam met Landbou se 9 Jondre Williams. Afrigter was Corne Kannemeyer, nou afrigter van HS Brackenfell se 1stes. Gustav Marais was in LS Mikro en MJ Hays in LS Gene Louw.
Wen is eintlik net n bonus.
@Djou: Dis nou n K…toewensing!
Old Boys game wen Boishaai 6-3 in n yskoue Paarl.
Little prediction – Boishaai by 5
with the weather forecast this weekend though could mean it can go either way
@BoishaaiPa: Tx. Sterkte aan julle en Gim. Hoop nie een van julle verloor nie.
Interskole is mos n week lank.
So my Boishaai maters. Don’t shoot me.Ek probeer n slag ‘possitive vibes’ deurgee.
@Kattes-Strofes: Ek het in my dae as Gim supporter in die Paarl geleer n stil bek is n heel bek.
@Die Ken: Beslis ja !!
@PaarlBok: Ek stem saam!!!!
@Djou: Saturday 15h30 on SS
At last we will see the “real Craven week final”.
Where and when will it be broadcasted?
@Die Ken: Indeed . 2-3 points in it . Can go both ways . Bounce of ball , bad ref call , bit of luck etc . Anything possible . Small individual battles will be vital . Both school have brilliant set of coaches
Boishaai se rekord teen Gim lyk amper so treurig soos Paul Roos se rekord teen Boishaai (en Gim) die afgelope paar jaar.
Of hoe se ek nou?
Twee puik spanne, twee puik skole. Good times.
@Cappie: I really miss Rom Rom Gimmies Kom badly . At least he leaves no room for any misunderstanding about where his loyalty is !!!
It’s proven very difficult to stop the go-forward of the Boishaai tight-5 particularly their locks. I reckon this might give them an edge in the match.
Looking at the expected run on teams the best matchups should be at 2, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13.
For me the battle of the 6’s and 8’s should be the best of the lot. Vissie had a huge game against Paul Roos but van Wyk punches above his weight. HJS’s Ncusane has a bright future ahead but Gim’s u17 Muller Uys looks like the real deal.
In the backs Schoor vs Rass might be very interesting. I think the Boishaai 12 la Grange is underrated, he seems to play a high percentage game and fortunately the Lions see value in him.
It will be nice to see what Max Thalwitzer can do with good quality ball. Given his size and skill level, I reckon if he were in Europe he’d attract huge interest from their clubs. I’m not sure what his prospects are like here in SA though, which is a pity.
@Kattes-Strofes: Honestly I did not ban him but I suspect a few people worked out who he is.
@Kattes-Strofes: hie kom n taait game
@Kattes-Strofes: Oh, by the way, Beet. Have you banned Rom, Rom, Rom. We all miss him. Please bring him back.
@beet: Yip! You are right , Beet. However, Paarl Gim have some deadly weapons out wide in wings Keenan Abrahams and ‘Mad’ Max Thalwitzer if those kicks are not accurate.
These two teams are well- matched in all departments and it may come to a brilliant individual piece of play or a crucial call by the ref. that could determine the outcome.
Off course I wish for a Boishaai victory , but it is still a great privilege to be a part of this occasion. I have made friends with a lot of the ‘old foes’ parents during Cravenweek. I am sure the frienship will continue, whatever the result.
@beet: Boishaai will dominate the next 11 years just as Gim did the last 11 years.
This year the gap is massive.
@PaarlBok: Are you saying Gim are the favourites for 2016 then?
@Kattes-Strofes: Here’s my rom rom rom advice to Gim!
I’m seen JL Cilliers test a few players at the back with some very well placed high balls. Nice weapon to have in the arsenal especially when you have a good kick chase game going.
@Cappie: Rom Rom Rom. Die Blou trein kom! He- He.
This will be the 100th year of Interschools but actually only the 99th game!..In 1928 no Interschools took place as Gim withdrew. Up to 2000 it was a very close fought affair (1stXV only) for 85 years with Boishaai winning 35, Gim 38 and 11 Draws. Since 2000 Gim has pulled away and won 11 with 1 draw and only 3 wins for Paarl Boys. The quality of the players produced can also be seen as they already provided 10 Springboks from this era alone while Boishaai only produced 2. The avg winning margin in 100 years is still only 4 points..
@beet: There is only one match that really counts and it is coming up this weekend. The unbeaten record is not an issue with the school or the team…The chances are good that we might loose in 2 weeks time in Riversdal without our 5 SA Schools reps. That is however part and parcel of the game and the season and the team that will rock up at Oakdale will be the Boishaai 1st XV. The players playing in that jersey will give it horns for 70 minutes , win or loose, so long as they give their best no one will complain.
@beet: I did explain it previously and you are seeing it totally in the wrong light. This is about Paarl and the two schools and their old boys and for the OB’s to see what the teams look like that are representing them this year…This event is not about charities or initiatives etc…This is about Interschools…It’s bragging rights for the South or the North..Its Galpil vs Bloedwors…If you havn’t experienced it you might get the wrong impression, but to be honest , you are the first person I encountered that had a problem with it.
Also I’m really looking forward to this match. I know there is talk of Oakdale being a real threat to Boishaai as well but this could possibly be the biggest challenge of the HJS unbeaten season so far. Given the nature of recent Paarl inter-schools matches, it’s like a cup final, formbook can give way strength of mind type character aka BMT
@BoishaaiPa: A massive occassion in Paarl. Given how close the main game is expected to be will no doubt add to the atmosphere.
I know you have mentioned the reasons for the newish addition to the pre-game before but personally I would like to see the schoolkids holding up banners of charities or an initiative that the respective schools support instead of faces of 1st XV players. The players faces can appear in the match day programmes which I’m sure many people will collect and keep for life. I don’t want to comment on behalf of others living outside the Western Cape, so for me faces on giant posters just comes across all wrong.
Great vibes like every year. OB’s of both schools already involved in match-ups..
Mens Hockey – Gim won
Over 40 Action Cricket – Paarl Boys won
