The Under-18 Coca-Cola Craven Week got off to a gripping start at the Markötter Sports Complex at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch on Monday with big wins dominating the opening day’s play in a fine spectacle of school rugby.

Boland registered the biggest victory of the day as they cruised to an emphatic 52-7 victory against the Limpopo Blue Bulls, while the Griffons defeated the Free State 41-27, and Namibia thumped Border CD 38-14.
Border also started off the competition on a high note as they secured a nail-biting 32-28 victory against the Pumas.

Hosts Western Province also had a strong start to the competition to the delight of the passionate home crowd at the jam-packed Markötter Sports Complex as they defeated the Blue Bulls 20-13 in a tense north-south derby thanks to five penalties by scrumhalf Jondre Williams and a solitary try by Nico Leonard.

The second round of matches will take place on Tuesday, with Griquas CD and Zimbabwe opening the day’s play at 09h00. In the main match-ups of the day KwaZulu-Natal will meet the Golden Lions and Eastern Province will go up against SWD Eagles.

DHL Western Province 20 (17) Blue Bulls 13 (8)

The battle between DHL Western Province and the Blue Bulls was physical as both teams used their big forwards in an attempt to stamp their authority. But with the teams closely matched on attack and defence they resorted to penalties early on to get onto the scoreboard, with the hosts slotting over two and the Blue Bulls one. The Blue Bulls took advantage of a lost lineout by hosts close to their tryline to score the first try in the 14th minute.

This handed them an 8-6 lead. Western Province, however, hit back with their third penalty minutes later compliments of Jondre Williams to sneak into a 9-8 lead. They backed this up with a fantastic try by Nico Leonard after finding space out wide, and added their fourth penalty before halftime to take an encouraging 17-8 lead.

The hosts struck again early in the second half with another three-pointer to stretch their lead to 12 points and they continued to apply pressure on the Blue Bulls on attack, which resulted in them camping in the visitors half for most of the third quarter.

The Pretoria side tried hard to retaliate, but the water-tight Province defence denied them from getting close to the tryline for several minutes. The Bulls determination eventually paid off on the stroke of fulltime as centre Louis Van der Schyff snuck through a gap in the defence in the last minute to reduce the deficit to 20-13, but this was a case of too little too late for the Pretoria side.
Scorers:
DHL Western Province – Tries: Louis Van der Schyff, Stedman Gans. Conversion: Andell Loubser.
Blue Bulls – Try: Nico Leonard. Penalties: Jondre Williams (5).

Free State 27 (15) Griffons 41 (19)

The clash between the Free State and Griffons was hard-fought as the teams tried to use their physical forwards to force their way onto the front foot. The Free State came out firing and crossed the tryline in the sixth minute to open up the scoring. But the rest of the half proved to be a ding-dong battle, with the Griffons breaking through for three tries, while the Free State only added one more in the half.
This handed the Griffons a narrow 19-15 lead at the break.

The Griffons broke away on the scoreboard in the second half as they powered their way over the advantage line with the likes of flank Johan Steyn leading from the front, and they used their effective support play to make their way through the gaps in the defence. The team was particularly effective at drawing the defence and off-loading to their support runners, which allowed them to add three tries in the second half, while the Free State were only able to score two tries and two penalties, which left them trailing 41-27.
Scorers:
Free State – Tries: Dian Schoonees, Siyabonga Luwaca, Jabo Mtshatsheni (2). Conversions: Christiaan Schutte (2). Penalty: Christiaan Schutte.
Griffons – Tries: Richman Gora, Marco Labuschagne, Christiaan Steyn, Gift Dlamini, Siya Ngxesha (2). Conversions: Luan James (4). Penalty: Luan James.

Pumas 28 (15) – Border 32 (15)

Pumas and Border were involved in a tight tussle from the outset with both teams putting their bodies on the line on attack and defence. Such was the closeness of the clash, the teams entered the break at 15-15 after each side crossed the tryline twice and slotted over a penalty.

The Pumas had the first say after the break as they slotted over a penalty, but Border hit back with intent with back-to-back tries. The Pumas, however, forced their way back with their third try and another penalty. But Border fought until the end and added another try, to take their tally for the match the five, which earned them a narrow 32-28 victory.
Scorers:
Pumas – Tries: Mlondi Mnisi, Cyprian Nkomo, JC Pretorius. Conversions: Wessel Muller (2). Penalties: Wessel Muller.
Border – Tries: Daniel Froneman, Thaki Boloko, David Brits, Heinrich Nieuwenhuizen (2). Conversions: Josh Allderman (2). Penalty: Josh Allderman.

Boland 52 (17) Limpopo Blue Bulls 7 (0)

The opening exchanges between Boland and the Limpopo Blue Bulls were intense as both teams tried hard to gain ascendancy, which resulted in the teams remaining scoreless for most of the first half. Boland, however, found their rhythm on attack midway in the second quarter thanks to a fantastic effort by flyhalf Adriaan van der Bank, who dictated play well. This allowed them to spread the ball wide and stretch the defence, which paid off as they touched down three times for a 17-0 halftime lead.

They continued to move the ball around after the break and the Limpopo Blue Bulls struggled to shut them out, which allowed them to run in another three back-to-back tries.
The Limpopo Blue Bulls hit back with a converted try in the 62nd minute, but this proved to be their only points of the match. Boland, meanwhile, were unstoppable on attack and added another two tries before the final whistle to take their try tally for the match to eight. Two of their tries were scored by Van der Bank, while he added six conversions for an individual contribution of 22 points.
Scorers:
Boland – Tries: Adriaan van der Bank (2), Barend van der Westhuizen, Earll Douwrie, Jacobus Abel, Rick Jordaan, Erik Groenewald (2). Conversions: Adriaan van der Bank (6).
Limpopo Blue Bulls – Try: Sibusiso Mlangeni. Conversion: Wernich Kachelhoffer.

Namibia 38 (14) Border CD 14 (7)

The first half between Namibia and Border CD was tight as the teams threw everything at one another. Namibia, however, made their presence felt early on with a try by Brandon Groenewald in the seventh minute to take a 7-0 lead. Border CD hit back with a try in the 20th minute, but this was cancelled out by Namibia’s second try of the half shortly before the break to take a 14-7 lead.

Border struck first after the break with their second converted try, but Namibia strung together phases on attack and applied pressure, which earned them an impressive four tries in 20 minutes. This took their try tally for the match to six, while Border CD were unable to add to their score. This earned Namibia a convincing 38-14 victory.
Scorers:
Namibia – Tries: Tristan Mouton, Brandon Groenewald, Chad Plato (2), Tobie Van Zyl (2). Conversions: Cliven Loubser (4).
Border CD – Tries: Josh Armstrong, Migcobo Bovu. Conversions: Alrich Plaatjies (2).

@McCulleys Workshop: When I get a poepol response like that it irritates me. At the end of the day these guys are just coaches, they should not stand on a pedestal thinking they anything special. It wasn’t directed at Sean more at Boishaaipa…

@BoishaaiPa: hahahahahahah! That makes me laugh, these coaches are obsessed with what is said on the blogs. I met him in Rondebosch about 2 years ago and had a chat. He knew everything about what was said on the blog. Do these guys think they are god or something special, they are only school coaches. In the real world some of us bloggers are actually successful businessmen and should have more respect than what they do. If they kept some of us on their side they might reap some sponsorship money etc…

Grasshopper- Send your boy to Boishaai sure Sean Snr will pull some strings to get Sean Jnr in. Specially after that lekker message you posted to Sean on this blog. Awesome stuff.

Umbiloburger- Plavie didn’t have a great game. Neither did Kriel, that was the weak area for the KZN Side. Thought Bader was a little quiet, didn’t play his normal game. Obversely been instructed to play a coached game plan, not to play it as he sees it.

Today’s game will be awesome, this I think will show who from KZN deserves to be in the SA Schools side. Really hope to see Palvie jol as there as been so much talk about him, so today will be great.

Player of the day for Day 2 was Bosch. What a top player. He scored a try, 3 drop kicks , a few penalties and conversions. His overall play was sublime. Palvie and Mchunu were both good. A few “names” were very quiet and some very lazy around the park.

    13 David Brits (Grens)

@Grasshopper: @CapeMan: True story. Took our youngest (grade 1) with to go and watch PRG vs SACS at SACS a few weeks ago, and walked past the junior fields where the primary school boys where playing in “tokse”. So, he asks me, why are they playing in “tokse” and we must play kaalvoet. I didn’t have a clue, so answered him “want hulle is sag seun”. And he just nodded his head

@CapeMan: Yep, I believe so. However, I heard a rumour that a school in the leafy suburbs of Durban also approached a few Selborne kids. I was told Bossr approached Glenwood, why who knows especially considering he was on a Jacques Kallis bursary. Selborne would beat Glenwood this year, unless the Sharks or Dolphins are going to sign him post school. Only putting my boy down there and Bishops in case I get a transfer from JHB to Cape Town (one can only wish). Also put him down at St Peters College & Pridwin up this way….

@Speartackle: he can’t be in contention for SA schools because as far as I know, you have to be in the cravenweek side to be eligible to play for SA schools. @Grasshopper: Possibly. You know the politics in WP schoolboy rugby. Bossr is the fly half who used to go to Selborne? Isn’t Bader Pretorius the best kzn flyhalf in KZN?? Thats what most KZN bloggers here say. Palvie looks the business certainly

    @BOG:

@Rugbyman: Seems the Bulls have too many utility backs in their team, hence everyone playing out of position. At the CW, a utility back is good against weaker teams, but as seen against WP, dreadfull against stronger teams. Some of the bulls specialist players (flyhalf & wing) for example was in their academy side, hence their wings scoring allot of tries as the backline was utilised by good running rugby. One mistake the selectors made was not choosing guys that is on form.

Terug by VS rugby.

@AffiePa: Nee hokaai broer…

Swak keuring. Swak besluitneming. Swak bestuur. In meer as 1 posisie sal ek 3 beter vir jou gaan uitkrap. In Bloem.

More is dit VS teen Namibie.

@Grasshopper: Chait was the fly half for the WP academy side that won Academy week comfortably. I to believe he is the best fly half in the province but one could say I’m a little biased because the young lad goes to my alma mata. The boy can control the game with his running play and his boot. I think he would have been an SA schools candidate if he was in the cravenweek side. I think he was also named one of the best players at the Kearsney rugby festival. I stand to be corrected.

Watched the Province vs Bulls game, a little disappointed to be honest. Bulls pack was overweight & unfit. Their front row was getting shunted. Where is Chait, the best fly half I’ve seen this year? Also, why kick the ball out with secs to play and 13-20 down. These boys need to be coached to think. Good luck to KZN today!

The way I see it, poor kicking to poles broke the momentum of the Bulls early. Bulls have a deadly running back line, but set phase was a shambles. They got zero go forward ball at the scrums, and bad ball off their own line outs. WP threw every line out ball to their 5 lock, but none of the Bulls could pick it up and contest 8-O

Was by wedstryd. Laaik daai vasskop. WP se vaste vyf was BB heeltemal oor.
Wp se 6 baie Goed. 5 Slot op 7 nie vir my gewerk nie.
    Donner, daai windtjie was koud….

@BOG: Jou waarneming is deels korrek na my oordeel. Gekies as 15 of 9?

@pietretief: I thought it was a disappointing day from a quality point of view. The last game was by far the best game esp the first half and I reckon both WP and the Bulls would have handled all the others comfortable. The best wings apart from Gorrah were Leonard and February with a lot more ball going February’s way so I guess I could have chosen one of them as well but there was really nothing to suggest they were a cut above the others that played earlier in the day. On attack Gans also stood out and I don’t think the door has closed on him being included in SA A as a wing or perhaps even a centre, so I would have even chosen Gans on the wing ahead of earlier game players. Loubser played wing for SA Schools last year.

@Rugbyman: Spot on your opinion, rugby is not all about goal kicking, but an accurate boot wins a match when it’s crucial and that’s what the Bulls needed today, and many of the teams at the 2015 cravenweek is going to need for the more close encounters on day 3 onwards. Congrants to WP, goodluck KZN, make us proud!

@Rugbyman: The Academy Bulls fly half according to SARU kicked 9/10 against us (KZN), 6 out of 9 against Freestate, and 4 out of 5 against WP. So in total just below 80% success rate at Academy week. As Affie ouer said at the top 13 points lost due to missed kicks today by die CW bulls, crucial. He would have made a difference looking at facts, no doubt, 80% of 13 points is surely more than the 8 points needed to win. Lets hope Pretorius got his kicking boots on for us, we all now how important an accurate boot of a fly half is.

@Rugbyman: I think the Bulls did ok in the setphase scrums..they did get 2heels against the head..it was in all the other aspects that their forwards got outplayed…WP tried to be to expansive sometimes and I think just simply shifting the ball through the hands would have had a better end result, butchered a try or two because of wrong options. In the end the pressure they asserted gave them the penalties that won them the game.

@Muzi: Sorry my friend but the wp 6 and 7 are smaller than the bulls… but their workrate and ball skills are superior then that of their bull counterparts… bulls were beaten by a better team and I strongly doubt whether the academy week 10 would’ve made any difference… the bulls backs were one dimensional and direct, whereas the wp back were far more expansive in their thinking… the province pack manned up and beat the bulls at their own game… I am a bulls supporter but we were beaten by a better team on the day… the boys gave it their best shot though and the commitment was there…

Muzi…with your backline choice it would have meant that Affies would have had 10 representatives in the starting team. Affies some times do magic, i do not think that they can perform miracles on national levels playing against a province. Just for interesting sake but I believe that Affies did select de swart at 10, fouche at 12 and van der schyff at 13 against Paul Roos and found same not to be the best combination.

I know that Naas Botha has the saying that if you good enough age does not matter, but 5 players of the Bulls pack are still between 16 and 17 years of age and in Grade 11. At school level i think that a year difference does have an impact because some of the boys only become young man in Grade 12, and with it comes physical strenght, something that might have lacked today, but I will defnitely watch this space next year and are of the opinion that the Bulls 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 will be monsters in the pack next year.

The Bulls pack was disappointing in the set phases. Visser and Moerat carried that WP pack on their shoulders and then some.

Poor Papier must be so tired of getting backfoot ball, happened the whole year at school level and now at CW. The Bulls wings did not receive 1 ball in open play, even though there were at least 2 occasions when a try was on on the outside.

I also thought the Border 6 and 8 was very good.

It was the first time I watched Adriaan Van Der Bank play….that boytjie is a magician…speed, vision he’s got it all…definitely an early contender for SA schools…even though I’m a massive Bulls supporter I hope he ends up at the Cheetahs or Lions…
Richman Gorrah….you were superb bro…stay humble and work hard..you have something good going for you.
Sjoe this much vaunted Bulls side is a bit overrated…it boggles my mind how a player like Runan Venter can’t even make the starting line up?!?!..the two wings, including Gans are invincible on defence, it should have been Ruan De Swardt @10…Eddie Fouche @12 and Van Der Schyff @13…how the hell can you beat WP without a reliable kicker?!?!
WP bullied that pack…those three loose forwards tried hard BUT sadly they are just too small in the contact points…I can’t believe it that there’s not a better number 5 lock in PTA than Henk Pretorius.
Damn….watching Chergin Fillies was like watching Werner Kruger…that Waterkloof fatty is 1.82m and 120kgs yet he can’t even bind or scrum…he’s pretty useless but watch this space Xander will sign him.
I don’t know why in the blue hell WP kicked the ball away…had they stuck to what they did in the first 20 minutes the score could have been by more than 30 points.

Western Province easily the team of the day. Really good intensity especially in that first half and execution at speed. I expected more from the Bulls but won’t at all be surprised if they come out of CW as the 2nd best team overall. The Bulls just seemed to go flat at a stage. Too many errors at and around that breakdown in the first half.

Border played a very patchy game. There were times when their continuity was very good and other times when they were just switched off. David Brits did his SA Schools changes no harm and Heinrich Nieuwenhuizen also put up his hand. Dale lock Kwanda Dimaza has baseball player skills and was a menace at kickoff restarts.
