Four tries either side of halftime in a game that Paarl Gim dominated up front and finished through their backs, saw previously unbeaten Tygerberg lose their unbeaten tag in unceremonious fashion. The final score was an massive 48-0 to Gimmies. That means Grey College is the only major unbeaten team left in South Africa in 2014!
Of all the major high school rugby teams in the country Grey College and Tygerberg were the only two undefeated teams left at the start of given Saturday, 17/10/2014. In fact the Tiere were the only team with a 100% record, while Grey’s minor blemish came against a very determined and physical Monnas who held them to a 10-all draw at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival.
The Tiere had recorded a very good 25-10 win against Noord-Kaap in early April but that was really the only big name rugby school they had met ahead of their clash with powerhouse Paarl Gymnasium, whereas Grey had already taken on a few of who’s who in SA schoolboy rugby list.
So it’s one down and the question a lot of people are asking is, is the “one left to go” bit possible in 2014. During the last 20 seasons Grey College has had 9 unbeaten teams. The last one was in 2011. However still to come for Grey this year are top schools HJS Paarl Boys High, Glenwood, Grey High School PE, Maritzburg College and possibly the toughest one of them to finish the season – Paul Roos.

Trek net jou been.
@DC ARMY: Sorry, I overlooked your first queastion. I did not see the game but from what I hear it was a rather “scratchy” performace by GCB. Their defense was up to ??. But lets not overlook the fact that Selborne has a good team- so all credit to them
@DC ARMY: Not sure, but I think it was in 2012. Of course I witnessed a loss of the Cherries against Selborne in 2007, IN EL , when GCB had that greyt team. On the day, the Cherries were the only team to loose. But, as much as I dislike to blame a ref, on that day, even the Selborne supporter next to me, apologised repeatedly. Obviously on Saturday, this was not the case.
@Bog: Will that be the same for Selborne, it’s said that you guys only led 20 -16 at halftime and the 14 points scored to make the score 34 came after Selborne received a yellow card. But you 100% correct though great teams always find a way to win matches, whether it’s luck or not, Affies for example could not have played any better than they did in that televised game and you still managed to win comfortably in the end
Secondly, when was the last time the Cherries lost prior to this weekend excluding the games against your First team?
Saterdag was net weer ‘n bewys dat basiese spel is soveel belangriker as tierlantyntjies.
@burra: You will not be the first to have said that. How often, even this season, have we not heard how well the opposition has played, how “lucky” GCB was, ect., ect.— And that despite every team coming at them with the kitchen sink. And after 12 matches or so, there they are. And they have not yet reached their true potential. But yes, they are only human, and on the day, anything can happen.
I don’t think Grey College will be able to hold their unbeaten run. BUT we shall see as the games go on
And may this “trend” continue for the remainder of 2014, and beyond.
