Marlow recorded a convincing 22-3 win at home against St Andrews to confirm that they are the province’s number 2 rugby school behind Grey High this year.Table

@BOG: Right on the money there!
@beet: They certainly deserve to be counted.
@beet: An academic friend of mine, a physicist, addressed his old school (in QT) at their annual prize giving as guest speaker and propagated exactly that- that we should have 10 technical schools for every 1 academic school. Look at the countries where we have witnessed substantial growth and you will find that the balance is in favour of technical schools. My friends advice fell on deaf ears and we are seeing the consequences.
talk about technical school is quite interesting
@Playa: I think Cambridge deserves
to be included in the next table listed
@Playa: Spot on. Technically trained people create employment, the rest, mostly depend on it- in a nutshell. Compare the contributions of a real engineer and that of a social “engineer” and you have confirmation.
@BOG: Hahahaha!
I must say, I agree with you.The technical skills are what we end up importing from other countries (and complain about lack of employment), because everyone in SA thinks they belong in an office job with a suit.Yet, we also complain that we need to produce our own goods to export internationally, instead of importing so much of our raw materials which have been converted into goods elsewhere.
@Playa: No demand for technical schools, is exactly where the problem lies in Africa. At one point there were 10 academic schools for every one technical school while the needs ito development, requires the exact opposite. In some (ignorant) circles, technical schooling is regarded as “inferior”, yet one can go from there to varsity. Unless a kid is going to study medicine, law or commerce, they should ALL go to technical schools. The need is for technical skills, not clerks and pen pushers and least of all, philosophers !
@BOG: Yeah, I agree. in my day, Port Rex were very competitive.They didnt win against the big schools, but they were always gave them a run for their money.Their rugby has dwindled heavily, and maybe one can say that there isn’t as big a demand for technical schooling nowadays as was the case in the past.So schools like Cambridge and Hudson Park have benefited by attracting those kids, and hence the improvement in their schools’ results.
Cambridge have gradually improved in the last 5 years or so.At the rate they’re going, they may just be the top co-ed side in the Border soon – but they’ll have to topple HP for those honours.Which won’t be easy.
@Playa: If you are on the outskirts of Cradock, you dont have much of a choice BUT to spread your wings( Almost like KWT)- you wont find too many opponents in the immediate area. Its a tragedy to see what is happening to a school like Port Rex. I dont think that they were ever top dogs in the region, but they were certainly competitive and often had representatives in the Border Schools side. At least Cambridge seems to have improved a bit, or is this just an exception this year?They and PR were more or less on the same level.
@Playa: I agree, you really don’t take any pleasure in watching Queen’s do that to Port Rex as an old boy
@BOG: Good for them to spread their wings. I wish more of the bigger EC schools could follow suit. We are seeing some tragic mismatches (latest being the QC-Port Rex game), which really should just be scrapped, and once off games can be played at the Border Rugby Day/Grame Rugby day, or something else similar.
Cost is an issue whih can be overcome though if the schools were to take that leap seriously.Just a thought.
@Playa: Sentraal, JF— perhaps more.The last time, Marlow played GCB, was 2010 (I think) and the margin was not all that big. Its the year when Grey kicked off their season against St Andrews in Grahamstown. They played Marlow en route back to Bloem(Somehow, 26-10 rings a bell ??) I think that they also play the Kimberley schools- how regular, Im not sure.
@BOG: Which FS schools do they play?
Phenomenal achievement for Marlow- a school with so few boys. Perhaps the reason for this, is their regular encounter with FS schools
I hope College carry their bad form into this weekend…we haven’t beaten any of our boys’ school rivals this year
