I just thought it was worthwhile to give a brief follow-up on 2 issues raised a few days back.
RED CARDS AND SUSPENSIONS
With regards to the last incident of a tip tackle witnessed, the school concerned did take action. They suspended their 1st XV player. Well done to the school in question. As mentioned other schools allowed their red carded players to start the following weekend.
POACHING
This recent matter was properly investigated by the school that would have been at risk of losing a junior age-group player. The report back is that the allegation amounted to nothing more than “BANTER” – official word used. So no smoke, no fire, no problems with agreements being breached as an initial discussion might have led one to believe.
@beet: Yip, Carel scored and then that half-bald Matie Rian Gouws missed the conversion.
@Ploegskaar: Ja I can imagine how devastating it was for WP fans to live without the CC for a year after the marvelous 80s. I vaguely remember that 89 draw against N.Tvl as well. I think either Carel Doop or Gerber scored right in the corner for WP that day. Must have been Carel. I think Danie only joined WP later.
@beet: A traumatic experience for a 17-old, in the pre-’94 era when the CC was everything and Province had not won/shared the Cup since ’89.
Just an aside, in the event we think rugby is the nutcase sport out there. I see the St Charles Uber-Dad that was suing the school to have his som reinstated as first team captain is not launching a R2.1 million action against the cricket coach. Astonishing.
In rugby we would never do that. We might catch the coach and moer him, but sue for R2.1 million .. off the wall!!
@Ploegskaar: I’m actually disappointed you still remember the culprit’s name
But I must admit that was one of the best Currie Cup season finishes I can recall from those years. Free State showing form in the second half of the season and coming from way back to force the midweek playoff game. Too good. Young centre combo of Venter and Muller were my favs that year.
@Rugger fan: That was in ’91, Brian Baenhoff tackled FC Smit (loosie/sometimes lock) close to the 22, in only a pair of white socks if I remember correctly.
It seems unfair that some schools take action against their red carded players but that others don’t. The suspended 1st XV player in question might well have had a big impact on his School’s match this last weekend. There should be some uniformity.
Great for the feedback
