@Smallies: yeah that’s right, Germiston always been pure Vaal…(+ Edenvale, Alberton, and Bedfordview – the latter used to have Jeppe Old Boys club).
@Vleis: lol, and Paarl could be Eastern WP
@yesnomaybe: Good suggestion. WP already with 2 teams at CW, so make them South and if you want North.
@Kaya 85: Grey
@tzavosky: Sasolburg is Griffons nou dink ek
@Vleis: you also had the Impalas cricket team with players from Boland, Freestate, Border playing in Springs
@Smallies: When my son was in primary school, he played against three soccer teams called “Easterns” in the provincial tournament, which was quite confusing: 1. Eastern Province (PE, Humansdorp, etc), 2. Eastern Gauteng (Boksburg, Benoni, etc) and 3. Eastern Jhb (Edenvale, Bedfordview, etc).
@Kaya 85: If I’m correct the Lions border is the Germiston Alberton border ,at least that was how it was when Eastern Tranvaal was formed in nineteen voertsek….Tranvaal taking Edenvale and Germiston ,while Boksburg ,Benoni ,Brakpan ,Springs ,Nigel and Heidelberg went east …..
@yesnomaybe:something like that could also work,or Freestate could incorporate Paarl into its union ,it would definitely solve their development problems
@Smallies:
I mean a school like EG Jansen should actually also be in the Golden Lions Union … its about 20 km from Ellis Park…way closer than e.g. Monument (40km), Noordheuwel (38km)…
Kempton Park too (26km)
@Smallies:
Simple solution
WP North & WP South
North can be Roos, HJS, Gim & Landbou.
South can be from Brackenfell incl Stellenberg, Dville & all the SSuburbs schools. The academy side should be an U17 side combining the 2 divisions. This would make it easier for trials, Practices, etc.
@beet: if one school in Paarl plays for WP every single school in Paarl should be aforded the same opportunity….,or the Whinelands should have their own separate union and team ,but we know WP will NEVER give up the goose that lays the golden eggs…
An email I received:
Just a remark about the Paarl schools and Paul Roos all playing in WP and not in Boland. You will still remember the days of Ussasa and the unpleasant fights which nearly ended up in the courts as Ussasa intended to force the relevant schools to play in the Boland.
These schools represent Boland eg in athletics and cricket, but WP in rugby. The reason behind it is that rugby is governed by SARU, and the other codes by their own mother bodies. Each code has its own constitution which determines the various boundaries. The same applies eg to Stellenbosch University.
WP Rugby Union will never allow schools within their constitutional boundaries not the play for WP.
There is also no sense in the relevant schools playing all their fixtures in WP, and then represent Boland at Cravenweek. (It happened in 2001).
Many boys from the Boland (Porterville = 5) now have the opportunity to play at Cravenweek, which will not happen if the four Winelands schools would be eligible for Boland.
Paarl alone should have a Craven week team. Who would (ever) beat them?
@Gold: Agreed but fortunately with SASRA allowing a second Craven Week team for the winning union from the year before, it allows WP to send two teams. It’s been working out well. I wouldn’t mind seeing WP being beaten at CW but I would hate for them to lose that privilege of fielding a second team as they richly deserve it.
@beet: Thanks for that. There is so much talent and competition for sports in the WP sides, it would be great to provide more opportunity for some in the Paarl area to also qualify for Boland. Or perhaps split Landbou and one Paarl powerhouse into Boland, and the other into WP with Paul Roos, and all the NS and SS schools.
@Gold:
Boland Landbou is outside Paarl, so one can probably draw a rugby map to include it in WP.
In Paarl itself if you drive North along Main Road from Boishaai to Gim, you’ll pass Labori at around about the halfway point.
Also in Paarl you will find Klein Nederburg (the school that Leroy Bitterhout attended the year he scored 4 tries for Boland vs KZN on Craven Week Saturday) and New Orleans.
Labori, Klein Nederburg and New Orleans form part of Boland for schoolboy rugby
Is it just me, or is it strange that Boland Landbou don’t fall into the Boland region for selection?
