It is perhaps not wise to get too far ahead of myself but a unique playoff type situation is still on the cards as the top three and still unbeaten schoolboy rugby teams in South Africa prepare to clash during the closing weeks of the 2018 season.
Glenwood hosts Grey College on 04 August in Durban and a fortnight later, Grey will host Paul Roos in Bloemfontein.
Grey College’s last unbeaten season was in 2011 and they last topped the rankings in 2014. Grey have made a habit of going through seasons undefeated though and since 1965 they have had an incredible 21 campaigns that ended without defeat.
1965 was incidentally the last time Glenwood completed a season unbeaten. So the Green Machine is hoping to break a 53 year old drought in this respect. Glenwood came close to being the top ranked team in the nation in 2008, so they are hoping to break new ground in this respect as well.
I stand to be corrected when I say Paul Roos were last undefeated in 1991. Although widely regarded as one of the powerhouse rugby schools of South Africa, in over a decade the Maroon Machine hasn’t finished top of the pile.
Based on the BHP rankings, here is how the non-draw permutations could play out if the losing team is always within the losing bonus points threshold.
Scenario 1:
Glenwood beats Grey College and Grey College beats Paul Roos.
- Glenwood
- Paul Roos
- Grey College
Scenario 2:
Glenwood beats Grey College and Paul Roos beats Grey College.
- Paul Roos
- Glenwood
- Grey College
Scenario 3:
Grey College beats Glenwood and Grey College beats Paul Roos
- Grey College
- Paul Roos
- Glenwood
Scenario 4:
Grey College beats Glenwood and Paul Roos beats Grey College
1. Paul Roos
2. Grey College
3. Glenwood
@jakes: Go GCB…
I predict that Glenwood is going to beat Grey College but is going to be close.(If you compare both teams to how they played against Affies I feel that Grey did not impress as I thought they would). Paul Roos on the other hand looks very strong and I think they will also win against Grey college. Therefor it is going to be a draw between Glenwood and Paul Roos for nr 1.
‘n Paar voorbeelde.
Go GCB…..
@McCulleys Workshop: Midlands ref
@PRondersteuner: Sorry I left that one out when asking BHP for outcomes because it translated to a sudden death playoff to determine no.1 in Bloem on 18 Aug. I will add it now
Me thinks that if Glenwood beats Grey and Grey beats Paul Roos:
1 Glenwood
2 Grey
3 Paul Roos
@PRondersteuner: Then it should be 1. Paul Roos 2. Grey 3. Glenwood
Hi Beet. What happens if Grey beats Glenwood en Paul Roos beats Grey?
@Playa: If memory serves me correctly House drew with Glenwood in 2008, they arrived at House as world champs of sorts and had us pinned at 22 – 13 with 5 min on the clock and we came back to draw the game, no doubt thanks to a Midlands ref or something.
I recall having a debate with Hopper some years back about that 1965 unbeaten team. Dale’s archives reflect a 5-0 victory vs Glenwood that year. But Hopper pointed out that according to his uncle it was more their 2nd XV that played that game hence not recorded by Glenwood.
On the subject at hand – on performances thus far, there isn’t much that seperates these teams. One might argue that because Paul Roos has been posting some big scores they are the most likely team to end up tops. But rugby is a funny game.On the subject of rugby being a funny game, what would happen in Scenario 4, where Glenwood draws with Grey and Grey draws with Paul Roos?
