Scott Mathie takes charge at DHS

Within a year of joining DHS, former Sharks scrumhalf and DHS old boy, Scott Mathie has been appointed as the 1st XV head coach. DHS celebrates 150 years in 2016

Mathie’s rapid rise to the top has also been witnessed in the KZN schools provincial setup where he plays an important role in the under-17 Sevens as the manager/selector.

Mathie has replaced one of the genuine nice guys of school rugby Christo Wilkinson, a decision which was made last year. Wilkinson’s body language on the sidelines was usually a dead giveaway to the passion he had for his job. Wilkinson helped out during a pre-season rugby camp but is now taking a break from rugby coaching.

Big Ronnie Uys, a journeyman who’s propped down for many professional teams during his career, is the DHS forwards coach.

More about Mathie
This February 2015 article from the DHS Foundation webpage:

Scott Mathie who was deputy head boy of DHS in 2000, has been appointed as the DHS rugby coaching coordinator.

Scott is a former rugby union player that played as a scrum-half. He played for the Blue Bulls, Natal Sharks, Leeds Carnegie, Sale Sharks and Eastern Province Kings. He played with the likes of Alistair Hargreaves and B.J Botha while playing for the Sharks. He retired in October 2013 from professional rugby.

Whilst at DHS, Scott played for the 1st Team in 1999 and captained the 1st Team in 2000. He has over 60 1st Team caps.

Scott’s vision for rugby at DHS is to be back in the top 20 in the next 5 years.

He will also be teaching History whilst at DHS.

Good luck to Scott, a very passionate Old Boy. If I was DHS I would get Andrew Stewart as the forwards coach, no more passionate Old Boy than him. Good luck to them getting into the Top20, it’s going to be a huge task and I think quite a bit of buying will be needed…
