  1. Go Kwaggas.

Sentraal het my verlede jaar geweldig beindruk.

  3. @Tang: And playing Paarl Boys @ St Johns. Tough fixtures, but great to see Boys High willing to test themselves against the best

  4. @Tang: @The O: Very tough fixtures for PBHS, but I wish you the best of luck. You’ll certainly have my support.

I hope that I’m wrong, but it appears that St Alban’s rugby program is on the decline: it looks like there are no fixtures v KES or Jeppe this year; Kennedy Tsimba is departing, plus I’ve heard that there are budget cuts, etc.

Kempton is my span vir die dag!!

  6. @Tang: @The O: I believe that congratulations are in order as Greg Hassenkamp has been appointed as the new headmaster of Boys High. He is passionate about his rugby, which can only be a good thing for PBHS rugby – especially now that you have Paul Anthony back too. Eish…I see tough times ahead for St Alban’s against their neighbours.

  7. @Vleis: I wonder if this will inspire a change in direction for Boys High in terms of offering sports bursaries???

    ReplyReply
  8. @Beet: Time will tell. I don’t know why they don’t mobilise their OB network like KES and Jeppe. The OBs of the latter sometimes find the kids and provide the funds.

  9. @Gabes: Hi Gabes. I hope to have an answer for you tomorrow. I’m sure there are many people who will be excited to find out about the streaming.

  10. @Vleis – I think many at PBHS are pleased to see Hassenkamp back in the fold. The combination of Hassenkamp and Anthony should give Boys High Rugby positive momentum.
I’m sure St Albans will find a way to stay competitive. Perhaps a new director of Rugby will be appointed.

@Beet – I don’t think PBHS Rugby will make drastic changes. Perhaps there will be some emphasis on bringing in a few rugby players but I don’t foresee anything radical.

  11. @Gabes: Sorry for the delay. Its been confirmed that DIGITV.co.za will livestream all the matches from the stadium.

  12. @Vleis: @beet: @Tang: As far as i know PBH only have the Jaque Kallis cricket bursary for sport. From the man himself.I hope they never change their ways.If the headmaster decide to give 1 or 2 for ruggas, then they must go all out with recruting,no reason to hold back then. With an old boys club 100 years old with old money,PBH will find their way into the top 10 very quickly.

  13. @Grizzly – I can’t see Boys High going crazy and handing out sports scholarships. I think a couple of bursaries to deserving boys could be a good initiative but I can’t see full scale recruiting effort. The current director of rugby may try and lure some talent to the school but it will be low key rather than a concerted school effort.

The JK cricket bursary is a great initiative and there have been some excellent recipients at Boys High over the last few years. Two boys really stand out. One was an academic and the other a very talented cricket/ hockey player. I may be mistaken but I don’t think one of the JK boys have played first team rugby.

  15. @Grizzly: Hi Grizzly, ek dink ons sal goeie span hê. Tawwe seisoen wat voorlê, maklikste game vd seisoen gaan by WK wees teen HJS :-P, dink ons gaan dalk bietjie “under cooked wees” vir Noord/Suid.

  19. @Grizzly: Some of the other scores so far are:
St Alban’s 19 v 27 Kroonstad (My concerns re the drop in rugby standard at St Alban’s are probably valid)
Affies 83 v 10 Diamantveld (Stopped about ten or fifteen minutes early)
    EG Jansen 65 v 0 Invitational XV
Stellenberg were winning by about 20 points late in the game v Ellis Ras when I last saw.
Montana are up 14 to 7 v Die Anker after 30 minutes.

  20. @@Vleis: Sorry don’t know what happened there. What I wanted to say is,I see you stressed out about the rugby at St Albans. The result today not to bad?

    ReplyReply
  21. @Grizzly: I wasn’t at Loftus today. I just saw bits of some of the games on DigiTV. Garsies struggled in the first ten minutes, as Kempton looked very motivated. However, Garsies then took control and knocked the stuffing out of Kempton, so I stopped watching after about 20 minutes as the writing was already on the wall by then. Instead, I watched the Kingswood v Selborne game, which was on Youtube.

I watched the whole St Alban’s game and they looked poor. To be honest the team from a few years ago, or even last year, would have put 50 points past Kroonstad. However, like you, my lightie is no longer at school, so it’s not really too big a deal.

  22. @Strepie: Sal moet sien of skolerugby ook gaan ly. Dalk gaan Superrugby in SA voort tussen SA spanne. Sal kompetisie begin en Cheetahs en Kings inbring en spanne teen mekaar laat speel.

Boland lanbou verloor teen HTS Middelburg. Framesby verloor teen St Andrews. Grey high school verloor teen Brandwag. Glenwood verloor teen Hilton… Wat nog? 8-O

  24. At one stage it was 15 against 12 in the Boland Landbou vs HTSM game. The Rooisbulle had 3 in the bin. BL didn’t take their chances too well during this period but did reduce the gap from 12-24 to 19-24. BL were on attack close to the HTSM tryline right at the death when HTSM won a holding penalty at the breakdown, which sparked a huge celebration amongst their players. It was a special moment and proved how valued a win against Boland Landbou is.

  25. Pretoria Boys High haven’t got a bad team at all. I reckon they would be very competitive in the KZN top league but against Paarl Gim in that first half, it felt like it two teams at two different levels. Gim have intensity and are able to play at such a high tempo with some frighting quick backs that forget tackling, its hard enough to touch them.

    ReplyReply
  26. @Beet: I think Pretoria Boys High competed well, but the Gim pace out wide killed them. The PBHS 13 is special ball in hand.

I think the Garsfontein /13 coaches must be gatvol of playing against teams bolstered by players from the EP. Yesterday it was Florida with 3 EP /12 imports that beat them, and those imports played a huge roll, especially the 8 and 10.

Garsfontein looked very rusty to start off with and Kempton took an early lead and competed well. The Bere 8 and 10 caught the eye, the locks both played well and the whole front row was solid. The 1 carried the ball well. At the back there is enough skill and pace to keep opposing teams honest, my only concern would be a lack of height among the back 3.

I left midway during the day and will probably not attend another of these days – whoever thinks that blaring music is an integral part of watching rugby is an certifiable idiot. It made the whole day thoroughly unpleasant.

Next year I will toddle down to the Greame day again – the school has a much better idea of how to host a rugby day than the BBRU and the matches are more competitive.

  27. @Rainier: Thanks Rainier. Personally I think that’s the sort of feedback festival organisers should be looking to acquire during the event so that they can improve on their offering in future years. After seeing Boishaai and Monnas commit to a high profile match at a early season rugby day, hopefully a few other schools open themselves up to the same arrangement. Certainly quality over quantity is a key component what distinguishes the good festivals from the average ones

  28. @Rainier: My pet hate is music during a rugby game. I was a announcer for many years and stopped because young teachers with no interest in rugby demand we start playing music for atmosphere……
Getting angry just thinking about it.

  29. @Gatskop: One of the bloggers I was trying to talk to asked DJ Dufus to lower the volume of the music, he dismissed the request.

If you do not believe me listen to the Digitv feed, 13 hours of that sonic assault would steal any sane persons joy.

  30. @Grizzly: Goeiemore Grizzly.
Ja ek dink bitter min mense het HTS ‘n kans gegee teen ‘n great Boland span. Baie harde werk, sweet en trane begin stadig vrugte afwerp hier by ons in Middelburg.
Sterkte vir julle seisoen (verkort) wat voorlê.

  31. @Beet: Goeiemore Beet.

  36. @ Beet @ Raineier I managed to watch the PBHS game yesterday. PBHS weren’t bad but Paarl Gim were far better.
The Paarl Gim team are very well put together. The whole backline looked like they have had played provincial rugby at some stage.
