Where to from here for Pretoria macro schoolboy rugby?

In 2012 Waterkloof had just re-established rugby ties with Affies after a 6-year fixture absence. The Klofies won that match scheduled in early March by 23-16. It also good result against a strong Affies team and meant that of their previous 10 games against powerhouses Affies, Waterkloof had won no fewer than 6 encounters – a very impressive record indeed and certainly adding weight to claims that they were amongst the best schoolboy rugby schools in the country, measured over a longer period of time. For many at the time, that Affies-Waterkloof derby was the real deal and an absolute must as it pitted the capital’s two very best school rugby teams against one another. But 2012 also seemed to mark a beginning point of a change in the Pretoria school rugby landscape. Although Waterkloof had put 60 points past Pretoria neighbours Garsfontein in a match that year,  Garsfontein where no longer this struggling co-ed just seeming to make up the numbers in the city; they were becoming a force to be reckoned with. They had won the PUK-reeks that year, made it to the Beeld quarterfinals and moved up to the more competitive TUKSskole-reeks in 2013. Almost overnight the momentum the Garsies Bere generated from their dedication to the cause, saw them overtake Waterkloof as the number-1 co-ed 1st XV in Pretoria. By the end of the 2016 season, Garsfontein were already the back-to-back winners of the Beeldtrofee, while Waterkloof’s last success in the same prestigious cup competition was back in 2011. Considering that Waterkloof had only opened their doors in 1979, their rugby achievements have been quite remarkable. Garsfontein has only been around since 1988. They don’t have a single alumni over the age of 50 yet. As a schoolboy rugby force they have arrived in a hurry but do appear to be going about their business with an air of permanence. For 2017 Klofies who have the unique Pretoria based school opportunity to pit their strengths against both Affies and Garsies, have decided to officially break rugby ties with Garsfontein. Both schools have fixture lists that will allow them to test their respective strengths against quality opponents from outside the city boundaries, but for a big rugby centre like Pretoria, given the circumstances, the decision cannot be viewed as good news – just like those 6 years from 2006 to 2012 when there wasn’t an Affies- Waterkloof match. This means that the Pretoria macro schools A-division for the Beeld (Virseker from 2017) will consist of just Garsfontein and Menlopark. Garsfontein – Waterkloof interschools results from 2016:
